Nvidia is working to fix G-Sync bug causing high power draw

Nvidia has acknowledged a bug currently affecting some GTX cards running G-Sync on high refresh rate displays. The bug seems to be causing higher than normal clock speeds, power draw and temperatures while idling in Windows while using G-Sync and a 144Hz monitor. For those who don't know, G-Sync is Nvidia's version of variable refresh rate technology, which allows the GPU to tell the monitor exactly what refresh rate to run at.

The bug seems to only be affecting monitors running over 120Hz, which is interesting as G-Sync was initially designed to work up to 120Hz. The bug was first discovered by PCPer, while testing out the new Asus PG279Q 165Hz 1440p gaming monitor.

While running at 144Hz or higher, the site noticed that idle system power draw had moved from 76 watts to 134 watts, while at 165Hz, things rose further to 137.8 watts. While running at 60Hz, the system was only idling at 73.7 watts, so the increase in power draw was definitely noticeable. This also caused the GPU to idle while running at 885MHz, while running at 30 percent of its maximum TDP.

Nvidia has acknowledged the issue and is now working to fix the bug: “We checked into the observation you highlighted with the newest 165Hz G-SYNC monitors. Guess what? You were right! That new monitor (or you) exposed a bug in the way our GPU was managing clocks for GSYNC and very high refresh rates. As a result of your findings, we are fixing the bug which will lower the operating point of our GPUs back to the same power level for other displays.”

KitGuru Says: The fix isn't available yet but we may see Nvidia put the fix in to one of its many planned Game Ready drivers, which it is releasing alongside big games over the next few weeks. Are any of you running a G-Sync display? Have you noticed any abnormal performance while idling the system?

  1. It’s interesting that I came from a 144hz 1080p vg278he display and didn’t suffer this problem but since upgrading to the 1440p PG279Q it’s been a thing. I’m theorising that it’s due to the bump in resolution or the DP cable in some way as I used a DVI cable prior to upgrading.

  2. Hey I have a GSync Monitor with 144 Mhz and the Frames I got in different Benchmarktestings have not been as well as I expected them while using GTX-Grafficscards so it couled have sommething to do with this Problem. Please contact me fore that if you think you can help.

  3. No. The issue doesn’t have anything to do with benchmarks or performance. The problem being addressed is that, at idle, when your computer is sitting and doing nothing, at 144 Hz and higher G-Sync monitors, the Nvidia GeForce graphics card is running at a high frequency and drawing almost twice the electricity as it would at 120 Hz or less.

It’s only at idle and it only affects power consumption.

  5. I always find it fun to theorize things that appear over my head, after some research and analogical thinking to the subject in question. Sometimes I’m so wrongs is embarrassing, other times my theory was close, and that is all I need. I have these weird personal theory’s on how God created the universe. I’m not sure if you’re a Christian, I am and I mix it into science in crazy ways. I’m a Christian that believes in evolution and the big bang. Anyway, I have far out there theory’s about how God brought all this into excestance. It involves the world of quantum mechanics, string theory, etc. Everything has a waveform and everything has a frequency. That being said He created the world with his voice, which is a vibration. I think you know where I’m getting with this. Anyway. Why I went off on this irrelevant tangent. I don’t know.I just saw you theorizing something complicated in which I’ll assume you dont have s full understanding of? Anyway I digress. Noe let’s see if people are dicks. ” ugh God isn’t real you retard. Sniffs inhaler. I stopped believing in fairy tales when I was s kid. Let me continue to belittle you and offend you because of your beliefs. And not ad any logical or coherent argument. No I’ll call him a retard yo inflate my ego” sorry for that I hate these jerk offs.
