Chrome to stop supporting older versions of Windows and OS X

Google has revealed that its Chrome browser will soon no longer support some slightly older versions of OS X, along with older versions of Windows. Starting in April next year, Google will no longer deliver Chrome browser updates or security fixes for those running Windows XP or Windows Vista, though anything newer than that will remain safe for now.

On the Mac side of things, Google is actually going to be ending support for operating systems a lot newer than XP or Vista. OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion is only two and a half years old at present but by this time next year, Google Chrome will no longer support it. This was all confirmed in an official blog post from the company.

Aside from Mountain Lion, OS X 10.6 Snow leopard and 10.7 Lion will also have its support revoked. Google claims that Apple and Microsoft no longer support these platforms, which is why it intends to stop providing updates. However, this is in contrast to the fact that Microsoft is going to be supporting Vista until 2017, a year longer than Google will be providing Chrome updates.

KitGuru Says: While I do think it makes sense for Google to stop supporting Windows versions as old as XP, it seems that support for Mac is being revoked at a much quicker pace. Mountain Lion is barely three years old, while Vista has been around and supported for twice as long.
