Last year over the course of Christmas day, a group of cyber criminals launched a series of DDOS attacks on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. Some involved claimed it was to force kids to appreciate family time over the holiday, others claimed it was due to poor security on these networks, either way, some of those involved were caught and arrested.
Now it looks like history may repeat itself this year, as a new group calling itself ‘Phantom Squad', has revealed intentions to try and take down Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network again this year.
The potential attackers have been tweeting about plans and taking votes on which network to attack first, which also includes Steam. Only time will tell if this planned DDOS will be successful but hopefully both Sony and Microsoft have learnt from last year and will be able to thwart any attempts levied at it this time around.
Speaking of which, Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony have all got together and discussed ways to prevent something like last year's Christmas DDOS from happening again, so maybe there will be better security measures in place this time.
KitGuru Says: These attacks on online gaming services don't really help anyone. A few of those who took part in the attack last year were caught, so if this happens again, there is no guarantee that they will get away with it. Were any of you affected by the DDOS attacks last year?
why don’t they turn their attentions to people/organisations that actually deserve to be taken out of circulation? Whats the matter kids too difficult to find real targets ?? Go fuck with ISIS and then I may be impressed. Picking on kids trying to play with their new games/consoles is a little spineless to say the least.
Exactly. Its childish. Anyone can DoS, heck I took down my router with a flood attack when I was in the early days of learning cyber security. It shows no skill, plus, as you said, they should at least focus on the real issues in the world not kids on xmas morning.
Oh look. another bunch of small dicked 10 year olds who figured out you can spend £10 on a DDoS server.
Such hack, very coolness
I guess we know a group of kids who got coal for Christmas!
What the hell is KEEMSTARx? That looks like it won.
“Phantom Squad” is literally the name 12 year olds will come up with! Or a bunch of creepy fuckers who could never get their d**k sucked through their teenage years and are taking it out on the world because they’re raging over being virgins
best part, now that they’ve made what amounts to terrorist threats they’ll have governments around the world looking for them. i foresee a couple families having bad Christmases, swat teams kicking down doors tends to kill merriment.
hey hey, my clan is called phantom company and they’re a nice bunch of people xD
(we’re also all over 18 and some of us are married).
And please don’t call someone a “creepy f*cker” based on just a name… that’s really kinda overreacting…
That being said I agree that I hate the people who do the dos attacks.
still, I’m sure you can be civil with your way of saying it.
Halo 3’s #1 trashtalker on YouTube, back when he used to be semi-funny
Why by civil about it? Do they deserve to be treated with respect? No…
maybe not, but you’re kinda raging about it alone here. do you think these idiots read article comments? even if they did, it would probably make them happier, because thats what they like to do: annoy people. They just want the attention.
Worst case scenario, they get a weird buzz out of being called a retard. Best case scenario is that they realise they are an actual retard. Win-win.
