AMD shows off 14nm Polaris GPU architecture at CES

This is set to be a big year for AMD with so many highly anticipated releases set throughout the course of 2016 and it looks like things are starting off strong as the Radeon team has shown off its new Polaris GPU architecture, which is designed and optimized for the 14nm FinFET process.

The Polaris GPU brings forth the largest generational jump in performance per watt in the history of AMD GPUs. From the sounds of it, this new architecture will be used to make graphics cards for small form factor PCs, bringing better performance at a lower power cost.

Polaris

AMD's own internal tests show that in a game like Star Wars: Battlefront, the new Polaris GPU can maintain a steady 60 frames per second on medium settings at 1080p while using just 86 watts of power, which is just over 60 percent less than the 140 watts that the GTX 950 currently pulls running Battlefront at the same settings.

The Polaris Architecture is based on the fourth generation of GCN, so it's not just power efficiency that is getting improved, we will also see improvements made to memory compression, the hardware scheduler as well as support for outputs like HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.3. This is all just a preview for now but as the year goes on, we will likely hear much more, particularly since shipments of the first Polaris GPUs are expected to arrive in mid-2016.

KitGuru Says: AMD has a lot of launches planned for this year and it seems like Polaris might be a pretty strong start. Are any of you currently waiting on new GPU launches from AMD or Nvidia?

  1. Currently got the 970 from near launch. Leaving it for a minimum of three years before an upgrade.

  2. Being more power efficient than a 28nm chip is all well and good, but they need to have that when against nvidias new Pascal GPUs too!
Currently got a 980.. will upgrade to whichever makes the best mid/high card for this year.

  3. Planning to do the same with the Pascal replacement for the 970, upgrading yearly is just ludicrous to me.

  4. Same here , I had gtx 450’s in sli , then 2 years later I got the 660 ti then a year later I sli’d it . Sold those this year and bought a 980 . Im stickign with my 980 until pascal come out at least.

  5. i have a 660TI and everytime i want to upgrade i’m like, well i will buy a VR headset so if i wait a bit maybe better GPU’s will come out. i was hyped for the AMD fury cards but sadly the hype wasn’t a 980TI killer 🙁 i really want that AMD makes a comeback.

  6. I pretty much only play BF4, but If I were to upgrade I would probably go with another 970.

My current GPU is the aging HD6870. So looking forward to Polaris as an upgrade option this year.

  8. Currently on a GT 730. I hope these are cheap haha

  9. Me too, can’t wait for the announcement of BF5, if it excites me as much as BF4 did then I’ll get the Pascal replacement for the 970 so I can get that 60fps on ultra gameplay 🙂

Got my dual 390x’s, (came by the second one for next to nothing), but if Polaris is as impressive as I think it will be, I may upgrade to a single card option that can do 75+FPS in every game as maxed settings in 3440×1440

  11. So as far as AMD goes, Polaris will be higher on the food chain than Greenland?
