The Samsung Galaxy S7 to launch in two sizes

If the last year or two have taught us anything about the way Samsung operates, it's that we can expect a new flagship device announcement around March or April, so we can expect plenty of leaks and insider information to surface for the next few months, one of the first of which suggests that Samsung is planning to release the Galaxy S7 in two sizes next year, much like Apple does with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

According to a report from ET News, a South Korean outlet, the regular Galaxy S7 will come with a 5.2-inch display, which will be flat. However, next year's Galaxy Edge will come with a larger 5.5-inch display, which as the name suggests, will be curved slightly at the edges.

Previous rumours have suggested that the Galaxy S7 will be as big as 5.7-inches and while this may have been talked about internally, Samsung likely only recently set it in stone in order to gear up for mass production. The South Korean report also cites sources familiar with the matter claiming that Samsung will start off with an initial production run of five million units for the device.

Mass production is also currently tipped to begin in February, with the bulk of the focus being placed on the flat Galaxy S7. Samsung is apparently set to produce less of the Edge handsets in 2016.

KitGuru Says: I'm not a huge fan of large handsets, so I'd prefer a 4.7-inch Galaxy S7 myself. However, Samsung has had plenty of success with its larger displays in the past, so it makes sense. I do wonder if a larger Galaxy S7 Edge would interfere with sales of the Galaxy Note though. Are any of you currently using a Samsung smartphone? Are you planning on upgrading in the new year?

  1. Sony has the right idea with their 3-size lineup of phones. Too bad no one else gets it. Samsung just needs to take up that mindset, make actual really-real “active” versions that employ android-no-shatter tech for their screens and then just put on a scratch-resistant film, extra large battery capacity, greater water proof/resistant depth, an SD card slot and you’d have a market busting model. They’re not even that far off from it with their S6 Active…. just give up this “edge” garbage that you can’t put into a protective case and get to work on the obvious, aholes!

  2. Having just bought an S6 Edge+ for my wife as a Christmas Present I anticipate the S7 Edge+ as I am due an upgrade in June. I will wait and see how it launches etc. Hopefully Samsung will revert to a free battery and an SD slot, the only ‘downer’ I have against the S6 which is a beautiful piece of kit.

  5. I agree with KitGuru on 4.7″ size but the Android World does not have Flagships under 5.1″ screens.

I use Galaxy Alpha which oddly has the exact S5 Camera BUT knocked down to 12 Megapixels so below S5 Camera Quality .Alpha has a few other quirks but is very rugged with a removable battery for unlimited use.

S6 is very compact for a 5.1″ screen but Battery would be a problem.

S7 IF it has a larger Battery and same size Device might be viable.

LG V10 shows promise- removable battery SD Card and rugged Metal Frame .
IF LG would make a 5.0 ” screen FLAGSHIP and a 5.5″ FLAGSHIP with
V10 type Design – they can win over a LOT of Samsung Customers .

IF Samsung makes Pro Devices like Note 4 in 2 Sizes OR at least makes a Note 6 with larger Battery.
And a S7 PRO Device with 5.1″ screen and 8.0 mm thick with 3500 Mah Battery-and SD Storage they can win back Fans and beat Apple for Pro Devices.
PRO PHONES don’t need to be super thin- they can be $ 100 More IF they have large or removable Batteries and SD Storage.
Pro Devices have not been made except
Note Series and hopefully will catch on from other Manufacturers because Samsung is weakening Note Series.
And there are NO 5.0″ Screen Pro Devices yet.
