Samsung rumoured to be making chips for AMD next year

It looks like Samsung might start making chips for AMD starting early next year according to new reports from South Korea. These chips would include a CPU (possibly of Zen architecture) as well as a GPU, both based on 14nm technology.

South Korean newspaper, Electronic Times (via: Reuters) was the first to pick up the story, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter. As always with anonymous sources, you should take the information with a pinch of salt.

Samsung currently makes chips for a few companies and the tech giant has been rumored to be interested in AMD beforehand. Samsung has also reportedly been working on a GPU of its own though this would likely before mobile devices according to earlier reports.

Right now, Samsung is trying to expand its client base. If this turns out to be true, then Samsung will begin mass producing chips for AMD starting in Q2 next year, so we won't have to wait too long to find out for sure.

The launch of the new Intel Core Ultra 200S family of CPUs along with Z890 motherboards was a thorny process. KitGuru suffered along with pretty much every other review site on the planet and you may have noticed we held off from reviewing of the Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K and Core Ultra 5 245K as it is clear to us that Intel has some work to do before this platform is ready for action.

  1. well with the launch of Greenland in Q2, this could mean an earlier launch of Zen, like Q3, and since Samsung already has 14nm silicon, full production can start way sooner and skip the ramp up phase

  2. I’m hoping for MARCH!!

  3. As long as you don’t blame AMD for delays just because you hoped for it earlier. I say October for Zen since both Zambezi and Vishera debuted in October as well. Greenland might be summer though, I see the next Pascal-based Titan arriving in March or April long before AMD does something about it.

  4. Upgrade? I’ll have bench first.
