Payday 2’s microtransactions just got worse, forum mods quit in protest

The Payday 2 player base has been in uproar since a recent update to the game introduced microtransactions, despite the fact that Overkill Studios at one point said that they would never resort to them. These premium crates can grant gameplay bonuses to players, which many have taken issue with. Now, the system has become even worse and players are once again very annoyed.

Microtransactions now include both cash and XP boosts in-game. This addition was made just a couple of weeks after the initial microtransaction backlash settled down. Reddit is filled with negative feedback from players.

On top of that, the Steam forum mods for the game are now refusing to work, due to the sheer amount of backlash occurring right now, some of which is being directed at them: “We've recently been under a great deal of stress after the Crimefest update. A number of death threats thrown at us as well as much more heavy moderation needed due to a huge increase in users breaking the rules. We are not paid and have been in a very stressful situation”, one of the mods wrote.

“If Overkill decides to let us go as moderators it's something we are prepared for, I personally cannot sit by when they continue to promote immoral business practices. I felt the skins system needed work but could function. The recent safe update showed against that. I'm very sorry that it has come to this situation but the stress we have had to manage with, coupled with our unhappiness with the situation has pushed us to make this choice.”

Overkill initially justified its microtransactions by letting players know that base game and DLC sales weren't generating enough money to keep development costs afloat on a long-term basis.

KitGuru Says: Overkill had it bad when microtransactions were first implemented but now it is almost like they are trying to push their players away. The Steam forum mods have even quit in protest, which goes to show just how strongly the players feel about these recent business decisions. It took Overkill well over a week to respond to comments last time this happened, so I wouldn't expect an official statement for a few days.

  1. People still playing this? c’mon the game was fun for a few months but there’s nothing much else to do after exhausting all maps and challenges with your friends. My friends and I have moved way past this game to care. It ain’t no counter-strike that keeps us coming back for some quick match goodness.

  2. Just play something else!!!!!

  3. I played it for a few weeks. The mobile like game selection was meh, the home base was meh. The detail when actaully in the game was pretty nice (reloading with a round chamber was different than reloading while mag empty and no round chamber. I like details like this) however NPC fighting with mindless AI and just swarms of “shoot them before they shoot you” gets old really quick.

  4. Death threats is a bit….overkill

  5. Well little kids are fucking morons. let’s not forget the time David Vonderhaar got a shitstorm of death threats from little pre-pubescent squeakers for changing reload timers and rate of fire by mere milliseconds

  6. Never cared for the series anyway. It helps to be really picky about video games.

  8. The mods are on strike lol? The forums are in an uproar? but you know that micro transactions carry the day and just look at EA and Ubisoft – Both see impressive return on that extra grab but who’s paying. The fact is that there IS a market for this and that these people need to grow the hell up and realise that the majority of people want these micro-transactions.

The do care about the players & community. Hell yeah, they do! That’s why they’re putting more stuff out, but they gotta eat too you know and if successful, they’ll probably make a case to an investor for a Payday 3.

Question. Who pays for the servers. Who pays for development on any patches. It all costs money and then they have to eat. The concept of Free DLC, in perpetuity, is stupid. These butt hurt dwellers want to turn on the crocodile tears to extort free content from a group that is probably on their last legs in some way, and i find that to be a special kind of despicable.

Im glad EA, CD or whoever can afford to throw some free stuff our way but lets get over the notion that every add on should be for free.

  9. That’s the problem.
I like those games (1 & 2), they are funny to play with coop friends (kind of like Left 4 Dead), but I don’t go back to completed mission, even if completed poorly. I come back every now and then when a new “heist” mission is available.
But the people still on this game are hard core fans, hence very relucant to accept changes.

Because let’s be honest, for any casual Payday player like myself, those microtransaction are really no big deal
The game isn’t competitive, only coop, so it’s not really a pay-to-win situation where you beat your opponents with money. Having casual players use these to make the game easier only harm themselves.
But since most of the remaining players are hard core fans, thoses changes aren’t welcomed at all.

  10. One week before launch Payday 2 was already making a profit for the company and a few DLCs can be the same price as the full game without representing nearly the same amount of content.
There are no servers to pay since all matches are locally hosted. That also means that if the host lags, everyone lags, if the host drops the connection, everyone has to start over. I would love to pay for dedicated servers.

With all that being said, I don’t know why people complain so much since it’s a cooperative game. You decide who you play with and if you want to get involved in microtransactions or not.
