God of War Ragnarok to get free rogue-like DLC

Following the overwhelming success of 2022’s God of War Ragnarök, there had been rumblings that the team at Sony Santa Monica were cooking up some DLC for the game. Even so, it came as a great surprise when the studio revealed God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla, bringing a free rogue-like mode to the game in just a few short days.

First announced during the 2023 Game Awards – then expanded upon in a blog post – God of War Ragnarök : Valhalla is “an epilogue to the events of God of War Ragnarök that follows Kratos on a deeply personal and reflective journey.”

Without going into any story spoilers, Valhalla sees Kratos challenge himself in a rogue-like mode which is said to be “different from anything we have done before in God of War history.”

As with most rogue-like games, Valhalla will see Kratos “cast off his armor and equipment, and instead build towards both per-attempt and permanent rewards. Kratos will have access to all his weapons and fully-upgraded skill trees at all times, but must commit to a shield and path of Spartan Rage for each attempt.”

Valhalla appears to me much more than a simple combat arena, letting you unlock new content and cosmetics alongside 5 different difficulty settings to match your preferred challenge level. Furthermore, while being free DLC for Ragnarök, Valhalla operates as a separate experience, meaning there are no prerequisites to enjoying the game mode – that said, it will contain story spoilers so embark early at your own discretion.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the DLC (aside from the fact that it is completely free) is just how soon it will be available. God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla arrives in just a few short days on the 12th of December.

While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
