Final Fantasy 7 Remake has a trailer, will release episodically

Right now, Square Enix seems to be experimenting a bit with its franchises. Rise of the Tomb Raider is currently exclusive to Xbox, Hitman will be releasing in chunks and now, we know that the Final Fantasy 7: Remake will be released episodically, apparently in an effort to fit more content in.

We already had the impression that Square Enix was trying to make Final Fantasy 7 in to a completely new game with this project, rather than rehashing the exact same thing that released back in the 90s. A new gameplay trailer shows off real-time combat, rather than the turn-based system from the original game, while the press release revealed the episodic release plan:

“Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be told across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience”, the game's producer, Yoshinori Kitase, spoke to Dengeki Online (via: Gematsu) a little bit about why this approach has been taken:

“The idea that a remake of Final Fantasy 7 would not fit into a single release was there from the very beginning. If we dedicated our time to a single release, parts of it would become summarised. We'd have to cut some parts, and additional parts would come in few, so rather than remake the game as a full volume, we decided to do multiple parts.”

KitGuru Says: A lot of fans wanted Final Fantasy 7: Remake to leave everything exactly as it was at release and just kick up the graphics. However, while that may be good for nostalgia, that isn't nessesarily going to grab a wider audience or even get the less hardcore fans interested. Square Enix seems to be doing something quite different, particularly for a JRPG, so it will be interesting to see how it works out. What do you guys think of these changes? Is Square Enix making a mistake by taking such a different approach to a classic, beloved title?

  1. This is one of the reasons a re-make should probably have never been done, if they have such limitations.

It is still early days right now, of course but it was said from the start that to be as successful as possible, they had to retain as much as possible from the original. This isn’t just fan-boy nonsense, this is what made the game fun. The only thing that seems to be staying is the story, yet the idea of an episodic release suggests that the story will be much more linear this time round, focusing on the main storyline.

One of the best things about VII is it wasn’t entirely linear. Great graphical content won’t save linear story or game-play, see Final Fantasy XIII which is probably the most beautiful game they’ve released in terms of graphical content. Whilst enjoyable as XIII was, the disappointment was in how linear it was.

I can see this re-make going along the lines of XIII and ultimately end up leaving a disappointing taste in one’s mouth. It is early days though and there was always going to be something we didn’t quite agree with. Games and Square-Enix themselves have changed a lot since back then. Fingers crossed it is still a good re-imagining.

  2. well itf its handled thy RE REV 2 was done in parts Im ok with that beacuz in the end it was a complete game..

  3. Yea I loved doing the side quests, hunting down the weapons, leveling to max (or as high as I could stand before getting bored), getting ultimate weapons, materia, ect. The story was great, but you are right

Oh except FF13: It was terrible. The graphics were pretty, don’t get me wrong – but the game was so bad. The story was bad. Combat system – bad. Leveling system – bad. Ugh I don’t even want to think about it. I really hate the fact that they moved away from the open world setting. I understand open world back then didn’t require as much time and effort, but it takes away so much freedom the player feels that they have. Linear games can’t have those good side quests because you are like “Awww I gotta run all the way back there” or use some shitty teleport device that just steals away the essence of drawing you in to the games environment.

I dunno man this might be the final coffin for them. I really love all those old FF did. You want legendary items etc go do side quest. Want to go by story mode only well you can. There’s even some side quest you dont even understand (I was playing as a kid) only to solve it by pure chance.Remember sabin’s combo now that’s awesome. I miss that 🙁
