We've been hearing a lot of rumours over the last few months regarding Nintendo's next console, the NX. So far, we have no idea what it is going to be or what features it will bring to the table but we do know that Nintendo has been making some interesting patent filings, the most recent of which, shows off a gamepad built out of a display.
Smartphone makers like Samsung have already begun experimenting with flexible displays but Nintendo could have other plans in mind. The patent image was submitted by five Nintendo employees, describing a game controller with a front facing touch screen display, with two holes punched out to make room for analogue sticks.
The screen itself could use LCD or OLED technology and even be capable of glasses-free 3D, just like the 3DS. The filing also shows off some non gaming usage scenarios, like a browser in the centre of the display.
Nintendo has been known to do its own thing and not follow industry trends, so it would make sense to see the company do something totally unexpected with the NX and as far as gamepads go, this is about as unexpected as you can get. Right now, we don't know when the NX will launch or when Nintendo will announce anything new, but rumours are suggesting that mass production will begin in Q1 2016.
KitGuru Says: It will certainly be interesting to see what Nintendo comes up with for the Nintendo NX, especially if it ends up following what is listed in this patent. Do you guys think Nintendo should keep trying with its ‘out of the box' controllers? Would you rather see it adopt a more traditional style?
The controller doesn’t need gimmicks, the new console needs competitive power and standard gamepads would do the job just fine.

I have a powerful PC. I agree with Highwayman. I don’t want to see Nintendo go the way of Sega.
They have more money than Sega did at the time of the Dreamcast. A LOT more.
That can change very quickly. But that’s besides the point. I meant being pushed out of the console market.
They will go the way of SEGA if all they do is make a more powerful PS4. Why would people who buy an Xbox One or PS4 now buy an NX if it’s more of the same? Nintendo needs its own audience, not hone in on the same. That is where SEGA eventually lost.
Incorrect. SEGA priced themselves out of the market by thinking too far ahead where people’s budgets were concerned.
I’ll have to say it more clearly it seems. I’m not making a comparison between business models. I’m just generally stating that I don’t want to see a classic company, such as Nintendo, lose out on the console market like SEGA did. The actual circumstances of which, are not what I’m talking about.
But on that note. They need to consider the existing market and what sells. It’s basic business. They have a collection of exclusive titles which is really what’s carrying them forward at the moment. They need to broaden their perspective to a wider audience as well as their established one. Their timing is also off. Many people buy Nintendo consoles for their classic titles while also owning another console. However more often than not, people tend to delay purchase of Nintendo consoles until more titles become available… which can often lead to purchase of second hand consoles.
Now imagine, if you will, a Nintendo console with all the classics and all the AAA titles people obsess over, from third party developers, not to memtion an indie platform. I know where I’d stick my money.
