AMD to delay Fury X2 to coincide with VR headset launches

We've been hearing quite a bit about AMD's upcoming Fury X2/Gemini dual GPU over the last couple of months. However, we may not see the card launch for a while, if new rumours are to be believed, as AMD may be delaying its launch to coincide with the release of virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Originally, it was said that AMD would launch the Fury  X2 by Christmas this year. However, according to a report from hardware.fr, this has now changed, with availability expected in Q2 2016.

“Some delays due to VR in overall ecosystem readiness, HMDS are now expected to be available to Consumers by early Q216. To Ensure the best VR experience, we're adjusting the Fiji Gemini launch schedule to better align with the market.”

AMD's upcoming dual-Fiji GPU card was initially announced alongside the Fury lineup earlier this year. However, the launch of the card has been pushed back quite a bit and will now end up releasing closer to next year's Arctic Island GPUs, which are also expected to launch later on in 2016.

KitGuru Says: A lot of people were impressed by the R9 295X2 and may have been waiting for AMD's new dual-GPU offering. However, it looks like it won't be coming out for a bit longer. Are any of you currently running a dual-GPU card? Are you planning on upgrading your PC in time for the Oculus/Vive headset launches?

  1. Don’t think I’ve known a least looked forward to card such as this!! Hell, even the 295×2 had some excitement attached to it!!!

  2. Is she wearing an ESD wrist band?

  3. The problem is that this card will launch not far from the release of the next gen of GPUs, so people might as well just wait for those…

  4. Honestly, I don’t really like dual GPU solutions, as crossfire/sli support in most games nowadays (particularly recent ones) sucks, so I don’t even bother anymore.

Better just to get a good single-card solution and call it a day.

Edit: That said, the Fury X2 does seem good for VR, which actually has a use for 2 GPU’s, which is drawing the same thing twice, one for each eye.

  5. Releasing right on top of Pascal strikes me as a very bad idea, especially given that Nvidia will be pushing Big Pascal with the first release.

  7. I like how secretive AMD is at the moment. Makes me believe that they have something hiding and I believe it is good. Or it could be wishful thinking. Who knows.

  8. I am interested in the whole DX12 Dual GPU thing. No more SLI and Xfire, just the API assigning to any available chips in the PC. Might be total BS too though.

  9. Or this product is specifically aimed at late-adopters or tech junkies since not everyone moves onto every new product or series.

  10. it sure would be cool if some USB ports were also included in the back of the card for just how many the Occulus Rift uses up

  11. Well, I’m going to be switching to Intel. Zen was supposed to be a Q1 2016 launch and they moved it back, and I wanted a FuryX2, but now I’m trying to decide whether to get a 980ti or Fury X, leaning towards a 980ti.
This is why you are struggling AMD, you can’t keep up.
