Nobody expected the sale of the Star Wars franchise to Disney to sit easy with original creator George Lucas. Letting go of anything you've worked on for decades is always supposed to be a difficult parting, but in an interview conducted with talk show host Charlie Rose, Lucas seems a little embittered about the sale and the direction of the new film.
“They looked at the stories, and said ‘we want to do something for the fans.' So, I said all I want to do is tell a story of what happened, it started here and it went here,” Lucas said in discussing Star Wars and its new entry in the series, The Force Awakens.
“If I get in there […] I'm just going to muck everything up.” You can say that again George.
He went on to make similar comments about people and perhaps specifically Disney, as having the wrong idea about what Star Wars is.
“It's not about “spaceships,” he said, but's a family soap opera. It's about the disfunctions in a family. “We call it a space opera, but people don't realise it's actually a soap opera,” he said.
This is a mentality that people have discussed with Lucas since the creation of the Star Wars prequels. That he and the majority of fans had very different viewpoints on what the Star Wars franchise was about, what it meant and perhaps most commonly mentioned, the type of effects that should be used throughout. That also cropped up in the Charlie Rose interview, where Lucas discussed Disney wanting to do a “retro,” movie. That's something he's opposed too still, despite years of fans clamouring for more practical effects and less CGI. Indeed the final entries in the series feature endless green screens, perhaps only eclipsed in their dominance by Peter Jackson's recent productions.
Regardless of Lucas' misgivings about the new film though, it's clearly found a sweet spot among fans and critics alike. As well as becoming the fastest movie ever to earn a billion dollars, it received a 94 per cent rating on Rotten tomatoes and a similarly strong rating on IMDB.

It’s always interesting how art is interpreted differently by the artists who created it and the audience. We typically joke that only the artist knows the meaning of their art, so learning about literature is often nonsense because it’s not about the artist’s interpretation, but that of academics. But with Star Wars the fans’ interpretation seems to be more important than the artist’s.
Seeing as I wasn’t very happy with the direction taken by Lucas in the prequels, I can only see it as a good thing that he does not like the direction taken by Disney. And I loved the new movie, despite it being a “retro” movie, although I did have to see it twice to be able to look beyond the retro feel.
seeing that in a lot of ways the movie is a retelling of a new hope i can understand why he may not like it.
i’ve never really understood the vitriol that the prequels got, hell none of that developed until well after they were released. phantom menace was a bit light hearted, and attack of the clones had a bit to much angst, but i’d rate revenge of the sith in the same level as the original trilogy.

Agreed. The prequels were overwhelming, and not in a good way. Red Letter Media on Youtube does a hilariously fantastic job breaking down why the prequels were terrible…
More egregious in my opinion was the reworking of the originals to add such awful and unnecessary effects. That to me was more unforgivable than all of the prequels combined.
The foce awakens, wasnt really my cup of tea, as a star wars movie it was good dont get me wrong, but as a continuing part of the story it was no good, it was a rinse and repeat movie… But they said that already before the movie was oit that they were going to use the same formula from the old movies because thats what the fans liked. There are very few things u cant pretty much directly trace back to one of the old movies and I find that sad that they could not renew themselves purely oit of fear that fans might not like it.
I have seen it because I have to, I must… But I dont need watch it before its free on telly again…
Well Lucas clearly used way too much computer stuff in his last 3 movies..
or maybe the tech was not ready.. either way the original trilogy still has a much better feel to it.
He has no say after Jar Jar Binks as far as I am concerned!
Almost ruined the complete franchise, Also going back years later to edit the originals adding unnecessary CGI effects just because he could, Also changing some of the lines such as Return of the Jedi where the emperor is about to kill Luke, There was a look and silence from Darth Vader that added to the drama that was unfolding, Yet Lucas added lines to Darth Vader where he says no no no. It was better with the silence not some stupid no no no where Lucas must think the audience is too dumb to realise what Darth Vader was thinking.
List goes on, Obi-Wan’s Krayt dragon call in original Star Wars sounded good, Changed in Blu Ray to sound like some drunk college kid, Then there is the Greedo Shooting.
Just leave the originals alone, Yes it is his work and he can do what he likes but ffs keep it to yourself. The rest of us grew up with the originals wether he thinks they were flawed or not, Don’t re write history!
I want those same originals in Blu Ray minus all the BS but instead he says he won’t release the original theatrical versions ever.

now it’d have been nice if they at least diverged a lil bit from the original “a new hope” but i guess that’s not the kind of risks disney would take. So basically its a good 2015 version of a new hope, its fun to watch, but thats it, nothing more.
