2022’s Uncharted film represented one of the first projects to come out of Sony’s PlayStation Productions subsidiary. Despite receiving middling critic reviews, it seems as though the film made enough money to warrant a sequel.
While the Uncharted film was clearly developed with future entries in mind, the relative success of the film – or lack thereof – led to uncertainty as to whether a sequel would be greenlit. It seems as though Sony are committed to at least one more entry, with Sully actor Mark Wahlberg recently discussing the film with publication ‘The Direct’, saying:
“I've heard lots of different ideas. I know somebody's written a script, and they're still working on it, and it would consist of having the moustache the whole entire time. Which completely makes sense; obviously, in that final scene, I have the moustache.”
As mentioned. Wahlberg plays the character of Sully: a mentor/father figure to protagonist Nathan Drake. In the games Sully is easily identified by his big bushy moustache. Speaking on the character’s iconic facial features, Wahlberg said “When I finally got the moustache, people really appreciated it. And it was a nice tag to the end of that film. So if we can make it better than the first, you know, I'd be open to it, but I only know as much as you do right now.”
Based on his wording, it seems as though Sony are confident enough in the IP to produce at least one more Uncharted film. While the adaptation received a lukewarm 40% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, general viewers were much more receptive, giving it a hearty 90% audience score. It will be interesting to see how the sequel is received, and whether a trilogy of films will eventually be made.
