Intel confirms 10nm chips still on track for 2017

Recently there has been some speculation surrounding Intel's release plans for its 10nm chips, with rumours pointing towards a push back from the second half of next year. However, Intel has come out to clear the air and has confirmed that its 10nm release plans have not changed yet, with the chips on schedule to come out in 2017.

The first family of 10nm processors were initially due out later on in 2016 but due to technical challenges and troubles getting transistors down to the appropriate size, things had to be pushed back a bit.

A recent job opening on Intel's site was the cause for further delay speculation, with the website ‘The Motley Fool‘ implying that Intel wouldn't be able to mass produce its 10nm chips in time. Since then, Intel has got in touch with the site and corrected the errors, stating that the “first 10-nanometer product is planned for the second half of 2017”.

So that's all there is to it, 10-nanometer may have been pushed back from the end of this year but it is still on track for product launches later on in 2017.

KitGuru Says: Intel jumped on these rumours very quickly in order to dispel any talk of a 10nm delay. What processor are you running right now? Are you planning on upgrading anytime soon?

The launch of the new Intel Core Ultra 200S family of CPUs along with Z890 motherboards was a thorny process. KitGuru suffered along with pretty much every other review site on the planet and you may have noticed we held off from reviewing of the Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K and Core Ultra 5 245K as it is clear to us that Intel has some work to do before this platform is ready for action.

  1. Pretty exciting, science is awesome! But really, for us gamers, what we really want is those 10nm GPU’s and those likely won’t be until 2018 or later =,(

I’m running a haswell, so yeah I would love to upgrade next year if I can afford it, I could tell everyone my computer runs on THE POWER OF 10!

I remember articles stating that 10 would be a long lived node, but it sure doesn’t sound that way anymore. 7nm chips will probably be a thing in 2018 so 10 might end up one of the shortest lived nodes! At least until 5nm comes along much faster then expected and then 7 becomes the new shortest lived… I hope so, it would remind me of the rapid advancement in the 90’s and 2000’s where after buying your computer brand new, it was obsolete garbage 1 month later. That was awesome!

Really though the advancement taking place right now is remarkable. Back then, every new die shrink meant millions of more transistors, millions of more calculations… Today’s die shrinks mean billions of more transistors. It’s staggering amounts of power and I can’t wait to see how awesome games will look in 10 years.

  2. Waiting for Zen
Like a lot of people who value competition I’m waiting for AMD to release them this year. Although Intel chips are faster ATM the reason for their successful tick tock strategy is the competition with AMD . Ever since my first Athlon Thunderbird, then amd64 I’ve seen the positive benefits of supporting the underdog. Mind you I’ve always preferred Nvidia gpu’s because of their better Linux drivers but that seems to be changing now too.
I’m looking at upgrading my FX8350 to Zen and may choose an AMD GPU to replace my sli 680gtx’s at the same time if they offer better performance and power efficiency. My first CPU was a 6502 .35 years of Moore’s law and competition are reaching their physical limit ,but hey it’s been a great run
    Cheers
    Phil

  4. Umm . Objection. Relevevance your honour

  5. I wonder if gaming is going to increase as spectacularly as it has over the past decades. With great power comes great work; the costs for gaming have grown at insane rate. This is why, despite an exponentially growing market, games haven’t gotten cheaper. You need to sell a million or more just to break even. And that is only going to get worse. So I wouldn’t be surprised if the focus of most developers is going to be on something else than graphical power over the next decade. The additional power could just be used to run VR at decent framerates for example; make it accessible to the masses.

  6. Sure, you are dead on right about the state of AAA. It’s bloated, costs to much, and is not sustainable. A few dud games and your studio can fold.

I have not cared about AAA gaming in years, it’s all about the indy scene now, and sandboxes. Some of them are starting to push some pretty good graphics and my old card isn’t keeping up! =D

But sure, I would personally love to see the extra power be used more for physics and VR. Imagine if in minecraft your leaning tower of pizza could actually topple over! This kind of power the new cards offer is going to enable indy groups to experiment with 3d games of the likes the world has never seen.

Now if you’ll all excuse me, I gota go hide in my concrete fallout 3 styled shelter I built deep into the earth in1 7 days to die… the 7th day horde is howling in the distance as night falls! I hope I survive the night!
lol at all the people who ask for fallout to be an online game, we already have something better, seriously!
