Quantum Break won’t be landing on Steam

There has been a lot of drama surrounding Quantum Break over the last week or so. Microsoft made the surprise announcement that the game would be coming to Windows 10 alongside the Xbox One launch with support for cross-saves and cross-buy, something that some Xbox owners weren't too happy about. Now, we have also learned that the game will be exclusive to the Windows 10 store at launch, with no Steam release planned.

Speaking on the latest Major Nelson podcast, Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg explained that “Quantum Break on Windows 10 is a Windows Store exclusive”.

While Microsoft has previously said that it has no intention of competing with Steam, the company does seem to be limiting some of its exclusives to its own store, with Fable Legends and Quantum Break only being available on Windows 10 via the store. Additionally, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is coming to PC this year which may also end up being a Windows 10 exclusive.

On the plus side, though, Remedy Games has updated the recommended PC system requirements for Quantum Break, confirming that the previously released spec was aimed at those wanting to play the game at its highest settings at resolutions higher than 1080p. The new recommended system specification calls for an Intel Core i5 and a GTX 970 or Radeon R9 390.

KitGuru Says: As an Xbox One and PC gamer, I am looking forward to Quantum Break and the new cross-buy/cross-save features. If keeping the game off Steam allows for features like that, then I see it as a fair trade-off but that is just my opinion, what do you guys think? Should Microsoft be limiting its games to the Windows Store?

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.

It is a shame, but I guess I will skip this game as I did with EA games who are origin only.
Too bad, but there are other games out there.

  2. It’s ironic that you don’t see the hypocrisy of boycotting games on Origin and the Windows 10 Store while simultaneously championing Steam. Oy ve…

  3. This is great news, and, quite frankly, it is mind-boggling that people would 1. be surprised by this, and 2. be critical of it. It’s Microsoft’s game. They have their own Store. Why would they support a competitor, lose a cut of the sales, and undermine their own Store? That makes no sense.

  4. Nikolas Karampelas

I don’t boycott anything, I just want all my games in one basket.

  6. Then do that, but don’t complain about companies supporting their own Stores instead of their competitors’ stores.

  7. Nikolas Karampelas

Complain? You are confused, I just state why I will skip this and some other games, because I want them all available in the somewhat neutral store of steam where I maintain my backlog of games.

  8. Coming to an article about a game you aren’t going to buy just because it isn’t in the walled-off garden you have pledged allegiance to is a form of complaining.

Steam isn’t a “neutral” store. It’s owned by Valve and it competes with all other video game stores. You saying you won’t buy Quantum Break just because it’s in the Windows 10 Store instead of Steam makes as much sense as me complaining that I would’ve bought Half-Life if it was in the Windows 10 Store instead of Steam.

Quantum Break looks great. It’s your loss for being stubbornly supportive of an undeserved monopoly.

I came to an article about a game I was interested on, and commented on it… I still don’t see your point.
kitguru really is a troll nest those days…

  10. The headline of the article clearly states it isn’t on Steam, so if it being on Steam is a deal-breaker for you, then why did you click on the article? Coming to an article for a game you won’t be buying, just to obnoxiously declare that you won’t be getting it makes you the troll.

That you won’t buy a game you have declared you are interested in simply because it’s in a different walled-off garden than the walled-off garden you’ve bizarrely pledged allegiance to is stupid. That you came here to tell us that is even stupider.

  11. Hey coip…

    GAMES FOR WINDOWS LIVE v2.0

What more needs to be said?

Microsoft said they wouldn’t pull this crap again, but here we are… they are pulling this crap again. I knew they wouldn’t resist, there is too much money at stake in this.

    STORE FRONTS OUT OF CONTROL—
Isn’t it great now that there is like 500 different apps for all these different game studiosenterprises. Constantly needing updating on everything when you log in to each one… needing a diff password and even usernames sometimes… my credit card info at much higher risk being entered in so many places.
I get why these big game studios want to do this $$$, but it sure makes for an annoying end user experience.

But of all the offenders… GFWL was about thee worst thing. A lot of bridges were burned back then with us gamers. So please understand a lot of the flames M$ is getting over this news, is not without merit or good reason.

And origin? lol.. Can EA just go bankrupt already PLEASE…

  13. Pull what crap again? Keeping all the profits of their games instead of gifting 30% to Valve for no reason? How dare they!
Dismissing Xbox for Windows 10 because you didn’t like a service that existed years ago and has nothing to do with the current one is moronic.

  14. Windows store is terrible, I made the mistake of buying ROTTR on there and I will never make that mistake again. Couldn’t use fraps, msi afterburner, geforce experience, logitech profiles, couldn’t swap to real fullscreen, couldn’t disable vsync, didn’t get certain graphics options, etc… Also patches came 2-3 days late. What a horrible experience.

  15. really? #1) Their store is fucking awful, so let’s say steam takes 15% but you sell 10m units. Is that better than selling on your shit store everyone boycotts and you make 100% of all 1m units you sell? #2) It’s less about where to sell and more about the fact that the MS Store is absolute garbage

  16. The Store is the only place on PC to get Quantum Break, so it doesn’t matter how ‘awful’ it is. That’s the beauty of exclusives. Never mind that it’s actually better than Steam in many ways (e.g. installations and uninstallations are much simpler). Furthermore, a Store can only be awful if you can’t find what you want in it. If you don’t know how to search for “Quantum Break” in the Windows 10 Store, then you’re the one who needs help, not the Store.

Steam takes 30%, not 15%. Microsoft rakes in $100 billion in revenue every year. The extra revenue that Quantum Break would earn on Steam is completely meaningless to them. They wouldn’t even make a tiny dent on their quarterly earnings reports. If you think the reason Quantum Break is coming to Windows 10 is to maximize the revenue it brings in, then you simply don’t “get” what Microsoft is doing here.

  17. You come in guns blazing cause he said a simple thing like that.

You find it “moronic” that people wouldn’t trust microsoft or even EA games, after all the hideous blunders. It wasn’t 10 years ago, they just shut GFWL down not that long ago 1-2 years is it now? Not long enough…

EA and M$ really messed up. Steam is heroes compared to them. If you are a dev, what platform do you want to be on ? Oh right steam… It’s a great deal for devs. They host your game, they handle the expensive bandwidth costs, you have access to MILLIONS of gamers. It isn’t unfair in the least to get your game on steam!

But competition to steam is good. I just don’t want to see 100 services that all need updating, setting up, ect ect. that is a nightmare, and it isn’t moronic for people to groan about it, so grow up and stop being a pooter. =3

yer a pootin! That’s what ya be doin! pootin! Pootin good. Have a nice day.

  18. No, I find it moronic that people are complaining that Microsoft and EA are supporting their own stores instead of their competitor’s store.

If I were a PC developer, I’d release my game on all platforms–unless, unless I had my own digital store front, in which case I’d release my game exclusively on my own platform, which is exactly what Microsoft is doing with Quantum Break, and which is exactly what EA does with their games, and which is exactly what Valve does with their games. None of this is surprising.

Steam is parasitic trash. I’d never use it. Quantum Break with Xbox integration and cross-save and cross-buy with the Xbox One version is far more exciting, and far more enticing than anything Valve can offer on Steam, which is nothing but Skymall for PC games.

  19. Lol what?

Steam is bad why? It has been absolutely a dream for indy devs. What a wonderful gift to the world of gamers and to artists who make games, Indy games are huge now. Unless you are minecraft, YOU WANT YOUR INDY GAME ON STEAM period. What have valve done that you hate them so much for?
I am willing to listen to your reasons if you have them.

And once again, I don’t find it moronic that people are complaining that M$ and EA limit there games to their own stores. GFWL was a nightmare, and ORIGIN is from a company who one worst company of the year award for good reasons. We just don’t trust them. You don’t understand why? heh, really? Do you need a history lesson on this?

You are excited about being able to play a game on xbone and pc why? I don’t find that feature exciting in the least, if I have a good PC, why the heck would I want to play the game I own on an inferior platform? And please don’t say “couch” pc games can be played on a couch now too.
Cross play is a highly situational feature, that 95% of gamers will not be using.

“far more exciting and more enticing then anything valve can offer on steam”

    really?

Quantum Break looks like another generic hollywood AAA story action game, big deal. VIVEOCCULUS with steam’s huge library of epic games is far more exciting. With innovative indy games abounding! Steam has made many of those great innovators millionaires. M$ didn’t do that with GFWL. Origin can’t do it, because everyone hates them to much to even try them again, and understandably so.

I’ll take project zomboid, or 7 days to die on steam over any of that hollywood AAA trash on xbone. 7 days is the fallout online game I always wanted, and as of alpha 13 it has been amazing. Glitches n all, it’s the most fun you can have online with your friends. So many sweet indy games on steam, could give a crap about AAA now. Indy are the innovators, and steam puts them up on a pedestal for the world to see, even when they don’t have much money to spend on advertisement. They are heroes for this. You hear me? Heroes!

Microsoft and EA hate this, because it’s too fair. Artists who actually make the games, make the millions now instead of fat cat CEO’s, and that’s the way it shoulda always been. Valve, made this happen. Not GFWL. NOT EA. Valve did. Valve did not get to the top by being an awful deal for devs and gamers, it got there by being and AWESOME deal for devs and gamers, period.

But feel free to be a hating on everything that is good and loving everything that is wicked.
I am a jedi and you are a sith. I am going to blow up your death star yo! =D

The debate floor is yours now, and I’m all ears.

  20. A wonderful gift? Steam is nothing but Skymall for PC games. Minecraft proved that PC games don’t need such a “gift” of taking a 30% cut for nothing.

GFWL is not Xbox for Windows 10.

Because it’s convenient: I can start on one device, move to another, and back and forth, with all my progress transferring seamlessly. That’s awesome. I could not possibly care less about “superior” performance. I’m a real gamer, not a twat.

If you aren’t interested in Quantum Break, why are you here on this thread? To troll? I see.

  21. I am here because I clinked the link to see what this was about. Then I found you trolling and had to bust yer chops.

It is a wonderful gift. 30% is a fair trade to have access to millions of gamers… So many of these popular games on steam would have hardly been noticed were it not for that grand stand to appear on.
If I was making a game, I would be all to happy to give valve 30-50% of each sale, for the sheer volume of customers they help me advertise to, and reach. A? How do you not get this simple idea?

    Cross play–
Again, why is it convenient? You would actually use that feature? Lol, highly situational, almost non of us would use it period. It’s a small gimmik. You are excited about this, but not what is going on steam with the indy scene? You must work for M$ or something.

And what is on consols that I can’t get on pc? 3 games? And what games are those? eh, not very good ones… More hollywood, quick time event, hand holding, linear, story driven game that might as well just be a movie I rented for a weekend. Yep, 7 days to die over ALL of that consol AAA trash you call a game.

I love the old consols though. My n64 is NOT for sale. Have a nice day!

  22. “Then I found you trolling and had to bust yer chops.” <– So you're admitted you're here to troll.

"It is a wonderful gift. 30% is a fair trade to have access to millions of gamers" <– First of all, charging someone automatically means it's not a gift. Second, Microsoft doesn't need or care about the puny additional revenue that that would bring in.

"How do you not get this simple idea?" <– How do you not get the simple fact that Microsoft doesn't need Steam. They have their own Store, and they make $100 billion in revenue annually. Steam is a puny twig to them.

"Cross play–Again, why is it convenient?" <– I have to explain to you why it's convenient to have access to your games across multiply devices with cross-sync functionality? Because not everyone sits on the same desk or couch every day, never moving. That's why.

"And what is on consols that I can't get on pc?" There are tons of console-exclusive games.

"eh, not very good ones" <– I have no interest in your subjective determinations of what is or is not good.
