Virtual reality is getting a huge push this year with plenty of VR or Oculus-ready PCs hitting the market over the next few months. While we have known the recommended specification for gaming on an Oculus Rift for a while, most places have been listing Intel CPUs. So now, AMD has officially listed its Oculus VR capable processors.
So far, AMD has tested five processors for VR, most of which are eight core, with one six-core part making the list. First up is the FX-9590 and FX-9370, which run at 4.7 GHz and 4.4 GHz respectively (not counting boost clock). Next up are the FX-8370 and FX8350, two eight-core chips that break the 4GHz barrier and finally, AMD has also tested the FX-6350, the only six-core part on the list.
It is worth noting that the official Oculus PC compatibility checker does not work on any of the CPUs on AMD's list. However, as Forbes points out, this is a pretty simple tool so if it sees a processor that isn't an Intel Core i5-4690 or better, then it will simply say that your CPU is not compatible. This carries over to older generation Core i7 chips as well.
According to the AMD representative speaking with Forbes, the list given here is capable of VR, despite not having the single-core performance of Intel's processors. DirectX 12 utilization is also said to help a great deal, so AMD CPU users should be able to get by just fine as long as their GPU is up to the task.
KitGuru Says: The official requirements from Oculus didn't list any AMD CPUs so it looks like AMD has taken testing into its own hands here. Things will likely improve further once Zen arrives at the end of this year. Are any of you currently running an AMD processor? Will you be picking up a VR headset this year?
Good to know. I have been using AMD processors for years, and I have recently bought an O.R. ready GPU. Glad I will have choice when updating my processor as well.
When AMD have to use 2x the cores to get the same performance you know somthings up…
The new Zen cores are double the size of the original cores of the FX… So you will be saying this about Intel processors at the end of the year. Just thought I would give you a heads up. 😉
ALL the AMD FX 8xxx cpus are ready.. the very first bulldozer 8120 @8×3.1 (3.4GHZ boost) or 4x 4.0GHZ is fully ready and has the power to do it
Keep dreaming. The best AMD will do is catch up in per-core performance.
amd have a good processors, but with a highs GPU, on high demand of power, amd lost again intel and there is the tru
i have a gtx 970 and fx 8320 oc 4.5Ghz and its not enoght, in bf4 is sad in ultra my fps drops to 58, and with a intel never below of 70 fps.
Can recommend a 6600K if in upgrade is coming, an AMD CPU will only bottleneck your graphics card. (From experience, I went from 60 to 120fps in WoW a few years ago when I made the switch).
Its not a dream… When you people get to see them, then you will understand. 😉 Considering the cores are also larger then Intel, single per core instruction set. Also designed by ex intel staff, why else would Apple drop Intel for Amd! Fanboys it is so funny to watch you all squirm.

Apple hasn’t dropped Intel for AMD. Also, their architecture is so spatially inefficient it takes more than double the transistors to do the same work (3.1 billion transistors for Carrizo quads vs. 1.4 billion for a Haswell quad).
Ever heard of DX12. Look at what that does to AMD CPU performance bud, then talk about knowing “somthings up…” and learn to spell while you’re at it.
What do you mean that the new Zen cores are double the size of the original FX cores? That doesn’t make any sense at all, especially considering that they are going to be putting 8x as many cores on the same die size. If anything, you should be saying that Zen cores are 1/4th the size of an original Bulldozer FX core. I’m assuming you actually meant something other than size.
That’s actually not true. The “best” AMD can do is actually surpass per-core performance. “If”, and I agree that it’s a very big if, Zen cores are truly 40% faster in IPC alone over Excavator cores, then, with all of the other performance enhancements they’ve done with Zen potentially creates a performance window that spans anywhere from just above Ivy Bridge to just over Skylake. Yes, Intel may top Zen with Gaby lake, but then there are already Zen+ cores in the making that are going to add another 15-20% IPC if not 25% according to AMD (and I trust their new marketing department now, they’ve been honest, and rather quiet, as opposed to the old department than over-hyped and basically strait up lied, which is why they were all fired).
So, technically, AMD “could” surpass Intel per-core performance, but the funny thing is that, regardless of whether or not they “surpass” or not, doesn’t matter. With DX12, Zen will outperform Intel considering they will be offering 16c/32t and 32c/64t CPU’s, with hyperthreading, while Intel will still be offering 4c/8t i7’s for desktop enthusiasts, unless you want to spend $1000+ for the 6c/12t or 8c/16t. So, even at best, Intel will have half the cores, unless you want to then go even further into your bank account and dish out $6000 for a Xeon server CPU with 12c/24t or 16c/32t, but even that still only half of a 32c/64t Zen Server CPU.
AMD will take the crown on multi-threaded everything (gaming, apps, etc) and will still perform competitively on a core vs core basis. That actually puts AMD ahead of Intel overall. Gold medal to AMD in the Zen Olympics.
Once again, that is “IF” Zen is all that it’s cracked up to be.
Right now, this is true, but in all fairness, you can’t really say “double the transistors to do the same work”, as the comparison really depends on the benchmark. There are multi-threaded applications where AMD’s architecture, although much less efficient, still performs better under certain circumstances. Yes, few circumstances, but still. I personally loved the concept of Clustered Multi-threading if they were able to execute it well, but they failed at that. If we had an FX Excavator 8 core CPU today at 5GHz, that would be something, but what I really hoped for was CMT+SMT, now THAT would have been sweet. An 8 core 5GHz FX Excavator with Hyperthreading, JYEAH! Oh well, I suppose Zen will be better anyway, so oh well. I’m still going to pick up a desktop Excavator APU while I wait for Zen, because the AM4 boards will be released before Zen is and I might as well put something in there in the meantime. it’ll be interesting to see what 2 Desktop tweeked Excavator Modules can do at 4GHz+.
AMD will bottleneck graphics cards on DX11 or prior games. In DX12 you’re fine, but for right now, I too also would recommend Intel over AMD, but I would not recommend a 6600K. I would recommend a 6700K instead. Yes, it’s more expensive, but with DX12 out now and being the future of gaming, the additional threads will be important. 4 core users are going to be envious of everyone with more threads in the very near future.
An 8-core 8350 can outperform a 2500k or 2600k in some heavily threaded benchmarks, but regardless Carrizo does not outperform Intel anywhere except in iGPU.
Zen+ will be at most 10% over Zen which would put them at performance parity with Skylake.
Those 16 and 32-core CPUs are server only, fair warning.
Don’t get your hopes up for many well coded direct x 12 games for the next 2-3 years
at half the price lol I am not complaining
Also not going to happen. AMD’s prices will rise as it becomes competitive to Intel. did you forget the 9590 launched for $1000? Further, do you seriously assume Intel won’t lower prices if AMD becomes a real problem?
This did not happen then… Do try to keep up!!!

The whole page is riddled with the word “rumor” for a reason.
Hurray!! This is the best news until now!! I own an 8350 FX and already pre-ordered Rift ..waiting for it. Only thing I might need is a better GPU Planning to upgrade my GPU once it arrives.
