AUO to release two ultra-wide 3440×1440 144Hz monitors this year

With ultra-wide monitors becoming more and more popular, display manufacturers have been working hard to increase things like resolution and refresh rate in order to get gamers interested. Now, we are finally at a point where 3440×1440 ultra-wide monitors with 144Hz refresh are a viable option and we should have two out this year.

While high refresh-rate 3440×1440 monitors have been around for a little while, they have been limited to 100Hz so far, which will change this year according to a report from tftcentral, which shows that AU Optronics (an off-shoot of Acer) will have a 30-inch and a 35-inch QHD ultra-wide monitor with 144Hz refresh rate available in 2016.

This would push things beyond the bandwidth limitations of DisplayPort 1.2, which also means we may be seeing DisplayPort 1.3 this year on monitors. Both panels will be based on VA technology and with a release in Q2 or Q3 this year though we don't have any pricing information at this time, unfortunately. Other specifications of the panel seem to include a 3000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness a 2000R curvature and 172/178 degree viewing angles.

KitGuru Says: Ultra-wide monitors have become increasingly popular recently and while many gamers have been happy with the current 100Hz limitations, there will undoubtedly be some waiting for 3440×1440 models with a full 144Hz refresh rate. Are any of you planning on going ultra-wide this year? Will you be holding out for 144Hz 3440×1440 models?

  1. I am starting to get confused. If those monitors are to come this year, maybe I will be having to choose between a new monitor or a VR HMD. I hate this. Oculus make the next Rift go at 165Hz @ 4K!!!!

  2. The Rift resolution is 2160×1200 (1080×1200 per eye) @90Hz

  3. I guess that’ll be the next generation of VR 😛 You’d need a couple of titans for that kind of graphical spectacle.

  4. 100 Hz IPS over 144 Hz VA any day of the week.

  5. is this going to have g-sync technology?

  6. Are you sure it’s an AV panel and not an AHVA panel (AUO’s version of IPS)?

  7. I expect it to have FreeSync, cuz it is free…but we will see. If this monitor costs more than pg348q, not many people would actually be able to afford it.

  8. No ips no buy, tn should only be used in e-sports and VA shouldn’t exist at all

  9. nvidia will support gsync through display port soon, it was spotted in one of their latest drivers

  10. why is it curved so much, i want 21:9 34 inch flat monitor with ips and gsync….

  11. G-Sync or Free Sync? G-Sync is their invention, Free-Sync is AMD’s!

  12. I won’t be buying the Rift. 90FPS is not enough for a smooth gameplay. I expected at least 120Hz for the rift.

  13. that what was spotted in latest drivers, some laptop users can use gsync without a chip.

the rift is just the rift, the monitor is for games, movies, work bla bla bla, so i guess monitor 1st… i want a 34″ hopefully +60hz and hope to get it on black friday.
