Importing a Samsung Galaxy S7 gets you a faster phone

Where you buy your smartphone from doesn't usually matter, but when it comes to the Samsung Galaxy S7, it does. That's because the UK's version will come fitted with an Exynos 8890 processor, while U.S. buyers will have the same handset fitted with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. While that wouldn't matter if they performed the same, the Qualcomm chip actually takes a noticeable lead in most benchmarks.

There isn't a huge difference between the two chips in terms of design – they both use the same 14nm process – but it is there and shows that buying the S7 in the UK is not the best place to do it. If you're going to and care about having your device be as cutting edge as possible – which when you're spending upwards of £500 on a phone, you want it to be – figuring out an import might make more sense.

As the Antutu benchmark results show, the Exynos 8890 equipped version of the Galaxy S7, is slower than Apple's A9 chip, by a few thousand points in the CPU test. However, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is faster than the Apple chip, which is a big selling point for Samsung, as a major competitor for Apple in terms of smartphone sales.

Far more important though are the GPU performance results, which show not just a small increase in performance between the Exynos and Qualcomm chips, but a near 50 per cent increase in power. If you're a smartphone gamer who likes impressive visuals, that is an enormous difference and suggests buying an S7 in the UK – if you are part of that audience – would be a poor choice.

This isn't the first time that Samsung has dabbled in mixing processors depending on the region. Indeed it was more uncommon when it didn't, but that hardly makes this an easier pill to swallow.

  1. Am I the only one who isn’t concerned by this? What real world difference will there be? I have an S6 at the moment and the phone is incredibly fast. I have ordered an S7 Edge for myself and one for my wife. If it’s quicker than the S6 that is certainly good enough for me. Massive battery, water cooling, memory card up to 200gb. The only downside is that I preordered the day ther started taking them and Vodafone have cocked up the order and said it could be up to six weeks now.

  2. Yes I am bothered, I’m bothered seeing as I have pre ordered my phone it’s due today and have only just found out that I’m paying the same for less performance than other regions. This is a low blow for me and I don’t think this is fair. I’m sure the phone will be impressively fast but as time goes on and apps/games get more demanding which is when I’m sure we will feel the difference. Bad move by Samsung.

  3. The Exynos will outperform in other benchmarks and might be more power efficient. Wait for the real reviews.

  4. Before I’m going to judge I’m going to wait till its out in the wild. See how battery life compares and how hot they both get. It’s a bit annoying but my year old s6 still runs very well.

  5. I preordered yesterday with Samsung, then found this out. Slightly annoying. I thought they were all going to be the SD820, which shows great performance and will be extensible for XDA developers. But Exynos is a nightmare and won’t be (S6 got CyanogenMod and AOSP late last year?). However, being Samsung’s own chip, it might be more power efficient and run cooler. That’s my only hope.

I don’t care so much, though, as I have an SD808 Moto X Style, which this is way better than.

  6. Exynos is the better choice over-all. You still get 8 cores(4+4) so better multithreaded performance and we all know Exynos are more power efficient. Hope oneplus will have an exynos option as well for the op3(other sellers like xiaomi used exynos b4 and it was nice).

  7. Wow, the 820’s gpu is impressive!

  8. Hey dude, here’s some Tesco Value beans that I’m selling as a Heinz Premier Magic Beanz. That’ll be £500 please

  9. Frankly, if you moneybags buy the new S every year why the f*ck does the difference matter? 😀 You shouldn’t feel cheated when you’re dumb enough to switch every year, it won’t even start getting slower 😀 Sorry if I offended you but I’m amazed by humanity (not in a good way :D)

  10. Free upgrade. I like to get a new phone soon as I can and still get good money for the old. I have two phones so one a year for me. I’m not offended. I just think you’re a cock end. ????
