Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is now available on PC

Microsoft has been very tight-lipped on Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on the PC since its announcement last year. However, today the game finally launched completely out of the blue, with full DirectX 12 support and built to impress with 4K graphics.

Aside from that, the PC version of the game comes with an unlocked frame rate and mouse/keyboard support, as you would expect from a shooter on PC.

Gears of War

The game has some system requirements in place too, with the minimums calling for an Intel Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a GTX 650Ti or an AMD R7 260X graphics card. Those looking for a decent experience at 1080p will need an Intel Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a GTX 970 or an R9 290x. Those looking to game at 4K on the other hand will need an Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a GTX 980Ti or an R9 390X.

In all cases, the game is only supported on Windows 10. On top of that, it is built using the universal app platform, which means no multi-GPU support so getting high frame rates at 4K may be a struggle at points depending on optimization. The game will also be stuck in Borderless Windowed mode with V-Sync on so that is worth keeping in mind.

Those on Windows 10 can grab the game from Microsoft's Store App for £22.79.

KitGuru Says: I'll be picking this game up a bit later to take a look at how it performs, particularly since it is one of the first major DirectX 12 titles. Are any of you planning on picking up Gears of War on PC?

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.

  1. Not the most trustworthy of pc news sites, but an article on Forbes states that the game is unplayable on fury-based gpus, averaging in the 15 fps region – though it’s fine on lower end AMD hardware.

Doesn’t appear to be a ram issue as a 380x can keep up @ 1440p. MS claims they’re working with AMD for a driver solution, but I thought dx12 was supposed to help alleviate driver issues?

nVidia gpus using g-sync are also recommended to disable the feature in the nvidia control panel, as the game stutters badly with it enabled – an issue in all windows store games.

Still no multi-gpu support. Still g-sync problems. Still forced v-sync. Still no exclusive fullscreen. Still no overlays (so no GFE or sys monitors). No .exe so no way to add to the steam library. No modding ability. No reshade/sfx ability. No trainer support (if you’re into that sort of thing I guess?). The list goes on. We’ve heard for years that they’ll do better in the future, and we’ve heard it again recently. This release shows otherwise. This is a remastered dx9, 9 year old title that chugs along on the highest end pc hardware.

Ridiculous microsoft. GFWL nosedived, your windows store will tread the same path if you insist on console practices onto the pc. To put it simply – pc is a platform about choice. Having options on how you play, where you play, and the form it takes (be it windowed with a stream open, multi monitor, exclusive fullscreen or VR or even something more exotic). Limiting our options goes against why we choose to game on the pc platform – and you’ll never win us over until you accept that.
