Nvidia rumoured to launch three GP104 graphics cards in June

There has been a lot of talk surrounding Nvidia and the launch of the upcoming Pascal graphics cards over the last few weeks. We have seen supposed leaked images of the cooling shroud, we have heard about a potential reveal at Computex and now, word on the street is that we may see three GP104 Pascal graphics cards come out in June.

Obviously this is all rumour at this point but according to Hardware Battle, Nvidia is planning GP104 replacements for the GTX 980Ti, GTX 980 and GTX 970, all for June, following on from Computex. Do keep in mind that the naming scheme for Nvidia's new line of GPUs is unclear at this point so while a new card might replace the 980Ti, it won't necessarily carry the Ti branding.

According to Videocardz, the GTX 980Ti would be replaced by a GP104-400 chip, while the GTX 980 would be replaced by a GP104-200 and a GP104-150 would be an add-in board only card (meaning no reference model) which would replace the GTX 970.

The most important take away from this is that it is another source claiming that Nvidia's new cards are coming in June. Right now, there is also talk of AMD coming out with the R9 490 and R9 490x in June so it could be a very interesting summer for graphics card releases.

KitGuru Says: Nothing is confirmed yet but these rumours have been quite exciting to follow. If Nvidia's new cards are coming in June, then we don't have much longer to wait. Are any of you planning on upgrading to a new GPU this year?

  1. Soft launch that is as news circulate around with retail being available late summer most probably for Pascal. On the other -red- camp, rumor says that 2 Solaris SKUs (medium and performance with 2 models each as usual) will be available 1-2 moths earlier.

  2. How can GP104 replace the 980Ti? The flagship card has always been the full die, meaning GP100.

  4. That’s addressed in the article. It says that while a new card might replace the 980Ti, it won’t necessarily have the Ti branding. This leaves the door open for a GP100 80Ti card later down the line. We don’t know how powerful the GP104 is yet but we do know that the 980 essentially replaced the 780Ti this generation so we could see that happen again this year. This is all based on unconfirmed information anyway, so take it with a healthy amount of scepticism.

  5. Yes, sorry, I was mistaking your use of the word “replacement”, as being in the sense of a “successor”, or ” update”.

I’m not sure how valid it would be to call these cards replacements, as the technology and process will be fundamentally different, as well as the VRAM specifications, which are supposed to be 8GB, both in the 1080 and the 1070 as well – thus hardly a direct replacement for the 980, as that only has 4GB. It’s also quite a curious way of looking at it – normally one would view replacements from their own, dynamic perspective, i.e the card that they will replace their current card with, as opposed to a sort of disembodied, static third person perspective, where the replacement is the card that has roughly the same performance in the next generation. That’s a bit like tracking the 2nd and 3rd hand buyers of a car as it gains more owners, as opposed to considering the successive new cars the original owner will go on to buy, if you see what I mean? Or constantly moving the clock face backwards to keep the second hand still.

  6. Lol, what in the Sam Jefferson county are you going on about?

It is a successor, and it is a replacement, and it is an update.

    980Ti- 28nm
    these new cards 16nm

Fundamentally different, noooo… they just compute graphics… Going from 4gb of ram to 8gb of ram does not make something fundamentally different. Its’ the same darn thing these companies have been doing for ages, just with much smaller transistors now. They ARE a replacement… for my dinosauric video card, it’s going to be replaced, with one of these.

  8. but gp100 wasnt gpu …. it’s co-processor for cuda or gpgpu
and replacement is only refesh to new process same core in it maxwell 2.0
if they have new they will fix dx12 async

  9. no gp100 for games ,it dont have raster thing in it ,no support for multimedia or games
    only cuda
and gp104 is only refresh of maxwell to 15nm finfet aka maxwell 2.0
no async till new gpu core
