Sony’s PlayStation VR is coming in October for £350

We have three big virtual reality headset launches this year and while the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are focussing on the high-end PC market, Sony has been working on an experience for console gamers at a cheaper price. Today at GDC, Sony announced that the PlayStation VR headset will be arriving in October at a price of £349.99/$399.99, the same price that the PS4 console launched at.

It has been rumored for a while that the PlayStation VR may end up costing a similar price to the PS4 console itself and now it looks like those rumors have proved true. The headset itself comes with a 5.7-inch OLED panel with 1920×1080 pixels per eye running at a 120Hz refresh rate. The headset has 360-degree head tracking and 9 LEDs, the Field of View sits at 100 degrees roughly and latency is low at less than 18ms.

This is much cheaper than the £530 Oculus Rift and the £689.99 (not including shipping) HTC Vive. Sony has also made an announcement regarding the PlayStation VR's launch library of games- there will be 50 VR game releases this year alone. Sony rounded out its announcement conference by saying “We believe PlayStation VR is best poised to deliver VR to the mainstream”, though time will tell if that turns out to be the case.

KitGuru Says: While the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive require high-end PCs, the PlayStation VR only requires a PS4- something that well over 34 million people already have in their homes. It looks like Sony has quite a bit of content already planned for the headset this year too, so this could be a very interesting release to follow.
