Motorola admits that the Nexus 6 was too big

Back in 2014, Google made a huge change to its Nexus smartphone release lineup with the Motorola-built Nexus 6. The device had a massive 6-inch screen and aimed to capture the high-end market, which was a step away from the cheaper, sensibly sized Nexus devices released in previous years. Now after some time has passed, Motorola has admitted that mistakes were made with the phone.

Speaking with TechRadar, Adrienne Hayes, Chief Marketing Officer at Motorola said: “You learn as you go. It was right about this time period that we were jumping screen sizes so quickly. I think it was one of those where we were like ‘is it screen size going to continue to go up?' I think, unfortunately, that was one of the products that was going to be the example of no, it's not. So now we know.”

However, while Motorola did build the Nexus 6 back in 2014, some of the blame lies with Google as they wanted the larger screen size. Motorola could have built the device to be the same size of the Moto X, which had a 4.7-inch display and had a very similar design all around compared to the Nexus 6 2014.

That said, while the Nexus 6 didn't sell too well, Motorola would be open to collaborating on the Nexus project again at some point in the future: “I don't know whether we'll do another Nexus device, but we would be happy to. It was a good experience.”

KitGuru Says: The Nexus 6 wasn't received too positively and it is clear that Google recognises where it went wrong having brought back the Nexus 5 last year. Did any of you buy a Nexus 6? What is your ideal screen size? I still use a 4-inch iPhone 5S myself though depending on the device, I could probably live with a 4.7-inch phone.

  1. I got one in Nov 14 and still use it today, I love it. It is big, probably too big for phone, but I can see things on the screen, which at my age was hard to do on a iphone5.

  2. I thought it was big, but it was more the price that put me off. I still have my Nexus 5 since release, it’s getting a bit old now, but it still works.

If they release a reasonably priced 5.5″-5.9″ with QI charging in 2016, I’ll probably upgrade!

  3. Price killed Nexus 6. Nothing else. With Nexus 6 Google decided to charge the same prices as other high end vendors did/do, however aside from pure Android, there was nothing spectacular about it. If it had been sold for $400 and not for $650, it would have been a hit.

I’m talking as a proud owner of this device. I love it. And it has a perfect size (I’m quite an average male – not a 7 feet giant with large hands).

My next smartphone will have even a bigger display (6.3″ minimum + SnapDragon 820).

  4. I have a Note 2.
I’d go as high as 5.7″ if the top and bottom bezels aren’t iPhone size.

  6. For sure, the size had nothing to do with it. Asian markets for example gobble up 6″ phones like hot cakes, that region alone should have made Motorola a killing in terms of sales but neoooo they had to overprice their way to failure. It is still too costly world wide long after the Huawei 6P launched.

  7. Stop lying. You don’t have any friends

  8. Don’t be tricked, they ask you to do butt sex gay videos. Of course if you are into this kind of work, this industry can bring you some money 😛

  9. I had a Nexus 4 at the time of N6 release and really wanted it, but it was just too expensive. The N4 was quite cheap, yet had great specs and looked great (still love the design, keeping it as a Harmony remote). The N5 was a great phone (still is), it was great for the price. My girlfriend still has a N5. I currently have a N6P and see no problem with the screen size and I’m a pretty average european. If anything, the screen size was the reason I upgraded from N4 to LG G3 (really bad choice) and from G3 to N6P. So, yeah, they went too expensive for too little without anything special to offer, really.

  10. Camera killed the device. Nothing else. It absolutely blows.

  11. I had this phone and the size was fine. The camera was horrific, though. Ended up with the marginally smaller Moto X Style, which I’d consider the spiritual successor, and has a fantastic camera.

  12. EyE Fµcked MamaSnarf

I still think its one of the best size and design for a phone but the pricing was terrible

  13. The 2014 Moto X was NOT 4.7″, it was 5.2″. And it came out before the Nexus 6. And THAT size is what the gen6 Moto-made Nexus should have been.

  14. i tried the nexus 5x but the 2gb ram hindered multitasking and the customer experiences with the phone varied quite a bit. some people had 5x’s that performed as good as or right under the flagship phones performance. I was unfortunate who had a 5x that handled multitasking and gaming about the same as the 2-3yr old Droid Maxx. LCD screen was sharp but color seemed off compared to amoled and just not as good. But the fingerprint scanner was awesome and fast usually and the camera was great, especially low light came up soooo much better. my camera app did glitch at times, it would take lightning fast pictures for a few seconds then there’d be the one time with 3-5seconds. then some fast pics and then bam 3-5second lag. Then phone randomly lagged here and there and definitely lagged in games like clash of clans and final fantasy record keeper. just wasn’t consistent or fast enough. like i said b4 it performed about the same as my 2-3 year old droid maxx which according to benchmarks the graphics chip and processor should’ve been double the performance or been noticeably smoother or faster.

i think i had a dud but i read so many reviews of similar experiences i’m making an unofficial guestimate that you have a 40% chance of getting a slow laggy nexus 5x than a good one that was supposed to reach. and Google made last minute choice to not 3gb the ram memory which helped it not work with heavy workloads as well.
the 6p was great just too big. no motorola phone was less than 5.5 except the moto g which didn’t provide the hardware i needed for multitasking and some gaming. so i was really hoping for the 5x to turn out good. but mine was a dud and i didn’t feel like trying a second one.
