This last week has been fairly hectic when it comes to Sony news. So far, we have had two reports claiming the existence of the PlayStation 4.5/PS4K, suggesting that Sony is planning a slightly beefed up version of its console with new 4K features. Now today, we have a third report claiming that this console will be announced this year before the launch of PlayStation VR in October.
This time, The Wall Street Journal is chiming in, citing sources “familiar with the matter”. Apparently Sony will be announcing its upgraded console before October but it is unknown at this point if it will be ready for E3. The new console is said to add more horsepower in hopes that developers can do more with PlayStationVR.
While some reports have claimed that Sony is also taking aim at 4K gaming with this new console, Digital Foundry spoke with its own sources and came to the conclusion that this is pretty unlikely for triple-A titles, which makes sense given that even high-end gaming PCs can struggle at Ultra-HD resolutions.
However, if the WSJ's report is accurate, then Sony will be arming developers with the tools to create better games for virtual reality at a minimum of 60 frames per second, which could also mean that we will see more non-VR games running at higher frame rates at 1080p.
KitGuru Says: We still haven't heard anything official but if this many reputable sites are in touch with separate sources speaking out about this then it would seem likely that Sony is at least experimenting with a newer PS4.
Yeah, it’s not going to have 4k gaming. How would anyone come to that conclusion? They can’t even get 1080p at 60fps, and suddenly a little extra power would give you 4k when high end pc’s can barely get that at 30fps (for AAA obviously).
A bunch of stupid people are they.
It’s just 4k playback of videos and things like HDMI 2.0, a new die size.
Maybe even some little updates like Tonga GCN and Puma (little, incremental) but nothing else.
I wonder if it really will come out with a little higher specs and if FF XV will play better on it.
What about the games … are they going to re-release them in 4k and charge people again, or patch the games. Anyway – backwards solutions for backwards gaming platforms. I prefer a monitor of preferred resolution, and an options screen to pick whatever resolution suits it.
great, so my old ps4 is going to be worthless for new games going forward? i don’t buy nintendo crap because they like to pull this type of move, updating the hardware slightly ever year or two and locking out older handhelds from newer games. wonder if they’ll be considerate enough to offer some form of upgrade program, i’m betting no.
more reason to stick with pc gaming exclusively.
This guy doesn’t get it
true enough, i don’t like kool-aid…
I just want a 4K bluray player included… thanks.
Who has ever said your present PS4 won’t play future PS4 games. This is PS4.5 not PS5. It is within the PS4 gen and will play the same games as your PS4, but in higher quality if you opt to buy it. If you stay as you are, nothing changes.
I really doubt it will be 4K gaming. The 4K will be the full spec for multimedia playback not games. Hopefully the hardware will get a boost to allow it to run games like a PC on max graphics at 1080p 60fps. If that happens the devs just make one game with high res assets and two optimisations instead of one. Your PS4 will grab the correct optimisation and set everything to max out the console.
Example: the standard PS4 sets the fps to 30, reduces the draw distance and turns same of the eyes candy off. Exactly what happens now. The PS4K optimisation will set the fps to 60fps, increase the draw distance and turn on all the eye candy. It will all be totally transparent to the user.
i’m guessing you haven’t seen the business model of nintendo handhelds and pretty much every smartphone? unlike PC games, where you can cut off graphical features or turn down the resolution as you so need, consoles are very restrictive with game options.
i find it hard to believe we won’t see ps4k exclusive games. and at the very least you’ll see games that have been gimped on the ps4 compared to the newer version.
The SONY VR headset better walk on water as this “new” box will be directly tied in with VR. The WSJ just semi panned the Oculus Rift and that has better hardware, better res, and faster refresh than the SONY will have. “Still pixalated and causes motion sickness” was said about the OR. Can SONY do better? I would NOT pre order either the headset nor the “upgraded” PS4.5+VR whatever until the reviews are in.
First thing I though of as well. Nothing like telling 40 million people worldwide that they have bought the Beta version of the PS4 and now the REAL version is coming out. Don’t expect SONY’s PS4 sales to continue to lead XBox One at least until the new new PS4 comes out.
perhaps it will just be a new Ultra Blu Ray player added to the box and some external graphics hardware.
I wonder what they upgrading…Don’t expect it to have my favorite Fury X inside though… I wonder if any console gamer can actually afford to buy a new PS4.5+PS VR? Id say get a new PC for that price….or rather upgrade mine…
If Sony is really preparing for a PS4.5 then this would be a very good opportunity for Microsoft to fix the less powerful Xbox One with a better hardware upgrade.
that may happen
Ahahah watch that be exactly what the “PS4K” is, a PS4 with a 4k bluray capabilities, not 4k games, 4k video!
then i will be a happy camper lol
