More sources claim that the PS4K/PS4.5 is real, could arrive in 2017

Last week, a report from Kotaku claimed that Sony was in fact working on a PS4 hardware refresh, currently dubbed as the PS4K or the PS4.5. This new console is said to pack in more power in the hope that 4K gaming might be possible. Now, a separate report from Digital Foundry has come to light, with its own sources also claiming that the new console is real.

The sources from Digital Foundry's report seem to refer to the device as the PS4K and could offer significant performance improvements over the current 1080p capable PS4.

While Kotaku's report seemed  to be throwing around the notion of 4K gaming, Digital Foundry is a little more grounded and tempers expectations as it is unlikely that Sony will manage to reach a specification capable of 4K with the same scope modern games have at lower resolutions. Right now, even the highest end graphics cards struggle with 4K in today's titles.

“Everything we've heard positions PlayStation 4K as a machine capable of playing current and next-generation ultra HD media, while also offering support for other aspects of the 4K spec, such as high-dynamic range and a wider colour gamut – aspects of the 4K spec that could be introduced to gaming”, the report explains.

This new console will likely be arriving in 2017.

KitGuru Says: While the original report made it sound like Sony was aiming to take on 4K gaming (which would have been a stretch), Digital Foundry's sources seem to offer a more down to earth view of the new box. It will likely be able to support 4K blu-rays and streaming but hitting the computational power to deliver 4K games in a console package likely won't be possible at this current time.

While I think the consoles are far too underpowered, I also think that it would be stupid for them to do this. Console is all about that one configuration thing which benefits the developers and the consumers that want an easier experience. 4K gaming won’t be possible on this thing, its barely possible on PC. You still need a super expensive graphics card to even try it, its incredibly demanding.

  2. Super Mario….perhaps that is their target. 4K Mario we should call it. It will be a laugh to see ps4k doing a powerpoint presentation at $400.

  3. I don’t care about the 4k 10fps. I’m just happy that games will finally be 1080P 60fps minimum.

  5. Forget 4K we are not going to buy an expensive new TV until the present one packs in.

Just give us 1080p. rock solid 60fps, high quality antialiasing, huge draw distances and all the graphical effects turned on, such as water refraction, bokeh blur and plants that bend as you push through them. The PS4 is an awesome console, but devs have to pick and choose just a few of the above in order to have any chance of a stable 30fps.

  6. LOL at the ‘1080p capable’ quote.
More like 900p at best and 30fps when playing demanding games minus the fps dips!
The highest end cards don’t struggle at all to run 4K games. If we were looking at console standards 45fps for a single Fury X/980ti is a freakin miracle.
The PCMasterRace standards however supposedly dictate 60fps at Ultra which is not true at all.
You can have a perfectly enjoyable 4K 60fps gaming experience like me with just two overclocked R9 290s in crossfire and just drop a few settings to High but keep Textures on Ultra.

  7. They won’t. That’s a hilarious assumption though. You really think this thingll have a 4.5ghz processor and a gtx980ti or something? Hahaha

  8. Work for Sony do we? You haven’t a clue either? We will all have to wait and see.

  9. Are you willing to buy an entire new $400+ console for having this “bit of extra oomph” tho?

  10. PS4 Hotfix.

  11. It’s rumored that games will be developed at 1080p then the console will upres them to 4K, similar to how games last gen were 720p then upped to 1080. No matter, I’m not gonna buy both a TV and the console at the same time, so whichever I can afford first and is available is the one I’ll buy. Then I’ll buy the other at a later date. As is I play my current PS4 on a native 720p TV so it’s not a big deal to me. The steady game performance is though.

  12. doesn’t matter though i have ps4 xb1 and pc i just what i feel like at the time all this crap about how pc rules is just that crap it’s what you want to or feel like playing at the time or with friends who might be just playing on a console.I play in 1440p on the pc yes it’s much better looking than a console and i have the division on pc and ps4 and i like playing on both and i have no preference which so lets end this pissing contest and people should just play the games on what they want.
