Microsoft's aggressive pushing of Windows 10 appears to be paying off as it has now become the second most popular desktop operating system. On top of that, Windows 10 is continuing to grow in market share while other versions of the OS are continuing to shrink.
This information comes from a market share analysis by Netmarketshare, which shows that Windows 7 dropped by 0.13 percent, with the aging OS now on 52.37 percent of computers. Windows 10 on the other hand has grown by about 0.97 percent and can now be found on 12.82 percent of systems.
Windows 8.1 is predictably in third place right now with 12.03 percent market share and Windows XP currently stands at 11.24 percent. So Windows 10 has only just managed to edge out its earlier versions and it still has a long way to catch up to Windows 7 but Microsoft's aggressive upgrade tactics appear to be working for now.
KitGuru Says: Microsoft has been pushing Windows 10 heavily over the last year and if these figures are accurate then it seems to be working. That said, some of its decisions have been questionable, to say the least. Have any of you upgraded to Windows 10 yet? Are you planning on hanging on to an older version?
I started with the Win10 insider program when it first came out. I have goine through a good 30 revisions of Win10 and have watched it improve steadily . MS got it right this time and anyone who is still grouching about Win8 is losing out on a terrific upgrade.
I have Windows 7 on my PC, and as yet have found no reason to upgrade. Windows 7 to me, is the final and complete Windows, and there was no need to make any more.
I have tried Windows 10 on a friends PC and I think its good, but not on a Windows 7 level. Windows 10 offers me nothing that makes me want to upgrade.
Windows 7 is the best version, with XP coming in at 2nd place. Windows 10 is better than Windows 8 and 8.1, but not as good as Windows 7.
My ranking of Windows would be this:
1. Windows 7
2. Windows XP
3. Windows 10
4. Windows 2000
5. Windows 8.1
6. Windows 8
7. Windows Vista
8. Windows 3.1
One reason to consider Windows 10 is Microsoft said that they won’t support the upcoming chipsets on any other Windows versions except 10. It’s ridiculous, but it may be reason to consider switching now for free rather than spend the $100 when upgrading.
