It looks like details of Intel's upcoming flagship Extreme Edition processor have hit the web a little earlier than intended as the Intel Core i7-6950X has been spotted on the change-log for Intel's latest management engine software on its support site. The change-log entry gives away a few key details, including its high core count and Broadwell architecture.
The entry listed the 6950X as having a 25Mb cache and a 3.5 GHz turbo clock. We also know that it will be a 14nm chip based on Intel's Broadwell architecture, it will also be the first Extreme Edition processor to feature 10 cores and 20 threads, something that we heard rumours about some time ago. The listing on Intel's site has since disappeared but plenty of sites, like Tweakers, managed to get screenshots beforehand.
While this information was revealed on the Intel site, it was done so early. The full reveal of Intel's new Broadwell-E lineup of processors isn't expected to take place until Computex later this year, so there is still a bit of a wait to go. We have reported earlier that a Gigabyte BIOS update for one of its X99 motherboards also outed that Intel's new CPUs will be coming in Q2.
So far, previous rumours seem to be pointing in the right direction which does mean that we may see Intel's 6950X launch alongside an 8-core CPU and two 6-core E-series processors- hitting the $400, $550, $1000 and $1500 price points.
KitGuru Says: Intel's new Broadwell-E processors are on the way and now it seems we know quite a bit about the flagship chip already. Now we just have to wait until the launch following Computex, which kicks off on the 31st of May this year. Are any of you waiting on Intel's Broadwell-E chips to release?
Well, at least it’s good to know that my X99 has an upgrade path in a few years time when the 10-core beasty will be £300-350…. 🙂
Very beefy and juicy indeed for a cpu.
