Just last week, Remedy Games came out with its brand new game, Quantum Break. While the game was initially due to be an Xbox One exclusive, a PC version was announced at the last-minute, based on Microsoft's new UWP platform for cross-platform apps between Xbox and Windows 10. Unfortunately, this led to the PC version of Quantum Break launching with a number of issues, some of which will be fixed.
Remedy has spoken out on the state of Quantum Break on PC, stating that the team is currently working with both Nvidia and AMD to deliver a performance boost. There is also a problem stemming from VRAM becoming fragmented during longer play sessions, causing rendering issues. Right now the only fix for this is to save and restart the game every few hours.
As for frame stuttering, Remedy already has this issue sorted though it has not been implemented into a patch yet. Some additional graphics options are also going to be added to the game, including control over film grain. V-Sync will also be added into the game as an option, which has been unsupported on the UWP platform so far.
KitGuru Says: Until Microsoft sorts out the issues with the UWP platform, Windows 10 exclusive games are going to suffer a bit in terms of quality on PC. I was warning people when dx12 was announced that it could very well be terrible. Judging by how many games where broken out of the gate at the time and giving devs more control, while removing it from amdnvidia, would most likely worsen game quality and guess what it does
I asked this to an Industry veteran, the opinion is this is indeed the way to go. This will force coders of the best caliber to survive, right now the market is over saturated with any tom dick harry guy with some C++ or API background. They don’t need to be outstanding at their work they just need to be good enough or just above average. Now this will force hiring to be more stricter in hiring the cream of the crop. This means the pay for such jobs go up and only a few actually make it big time. This is ideal for those who are genuinely good at it not simply out there to make a living because they don’t know what they are really good at.
I’ll wait for DX14 as I’m superstitious and will avoid DX13. Or maybe I’ll just use Vulkan right now on my perfectly fine Win7 setup…
It makes harder to create game, less people capable to do it well. It’s bad for the gaming. More bad optimized games will go out. I don’t care about how good the five person who are creating a game are, I care about having great teams that know exactly how good they need to be.
Not at all. It isn’t bad for gaming when cream of the crop gets to command a better salary for doing a stellar job. Right now the situation is like way more coders out there so the pay is lower, supply/demand. You don’t form great teams if only very few of them are great and the rest of them are mediocre.
Time will speak. But for now things are getting worse and worse.
