The Division gets new anticheat and sanctions for bug exploiters

A few weeks back, The Division's first Incursion launched and players swiftly discovered ways to exploit glitches in the mission to farm the highest tier loot in the game. At the time, Ubisoft said that it did not approve of this but no real punishments were handed out to players. However, this week Ubisoft addressed cheaters and exploits head on and has a new plan in-place to deal with it in the future.

There have been complaints about cheaters/hackers in the Dark Zone PvP area and now, The Division has a new anti-cheat system that should help catch more players out. The biggest ban wave yet is set to take place over the next few days:

“First, we have implemented new cheat detection methods that have allowed us to identify many more players currently using cheat engines in the game. We have already caught more cheaters in the last few days than we had in total during the previous weeks. As a result, we will be handing out the biggest wave of suspensions and bans to date over the course of the next few days. Second, when cheaters are caught, we will now apply a suspension of 14 days on first offence (instead of the previous 3 day initial suspension). Second offence will always be a permanent ban.”

Ubisoft also addressed those farming for loot using glitches. In the future, glitches and exploits will be openly noted by developers and then those that repeatedly abuse them will suffer punishments ranging from character progress rollbacks to account suspensions and permanent bans:

“We cannot simulate the experience that millions of different players will have, and how they will play the game. As a result, some bugs may make it through testing, and may be present when an update is deployed. In the event that a bug makes it into the game, and this bug can be used by players to gain an advantage, we need to be able to react and fix it, but also dissuade players from exploiting this bug until it is fixed. This is why moving forward we will adopt a stronger stance against players abusing exploits.”

“Our first step is to give you clearer and more concrete visibility. Should new bugs be discovered, we will quickly confirm if these are considered exploits. All known exploits will be clearly listed in a public forum thread and across our various communication platforms. Second, sanctions will be implemented for players who repeatedly abuse exploits and will vary depending on the severity of the abuse, as well as the history of the player. Possible sanctions include character rollbacks, account suspensions and permanent bans. Those who encounter bugs during the normal course of play have absolutely nothing to worry about.”

KitGuru Says: As much as I have been enjoying The Division, the glitches found in the Incursion during its first week did upset the balance of power, particularly in the Dark Zone. Hopefully these new measures will help avoid these problems in the future. Have any of you been sticking with The Division?

  1. “glitches and exploits will be openly noted by developers and then those that repeatedly abuse them will suffer punishments”

Wait, so they openly acknowledge glitches, don’t bother to fix them, and publicly disclose them?
I am baffled by their reasoning, from the client-sided net-code to the absolutely hideous amount of bugs the game has.

I hate to say it, but inb4 lag is used as an advantage (hit-detection is client-sided, PVP be damned, I experienced this personally).

  2. Yes we know cheating is bad but answer me this how can a company ban someone from playing when the person paid for the game. Like I said cheating is bad well when online because it makes it unfair to others. But there has to be other ways to handle this such as rolling back the character back to zero like a reset to the beginning of he game & all items removed like a do over. If they think the anti cheat detection system is that good then actually put it to good use and make these player not want to stay playing the game. If they have to start over a couple times I’m sure they will just go away & it will be much more torture for them as well. Just banning them is wrong because even if they are cheating they still paid for the game & I do not care what the Eula says it will not stand up in court if a ex player decides to be brave & take them to court & sue. Cheating is stealing sorta but so is banning as well because you are stealing a persons property that was apid for with real money. All the company is losing is virtual crap made up by a computer. I don’t even play this crap game mainly because it is online only & I play only local based games which are totally in my control & no fracked up company can stop me from playing a game I paid for if & when I ever decide to use a trainer if I happen to need help getting out of a jam & no other options seem to work. That is my business & why I refuse to play into these companies hands by buying into their online crap where they have control on whether I may be allowed to play or not.

  3. I have people killing me in the darkzone for no other reason than just because they can as their gear is much better games like this seem like a good idea but it attracts the worst kind of people any survival mmo type game will have scum scurrying from under their rocks to ruin other peoples gaming experiences.

  4. Fortunately or unfortunately, breaking the EULA will stand before the court. Previous cases can attest of that (not for cheating because you will never see someone openly admit he cheated in front of the court and that he altered the game to do so which is also an infringement).
People only buy a license to play a software (they don’t actually own the software itself that’s why they can’t alter it, distribute it, and so on …).

  5. although I completely understand the reasoning behind all the cheating thing, their decision about bug exploit is laughable. Don’t release the game with bugs (or improve you QA), fix the exploit asap instead of waiting for the next batch of patches, or shut down the event until it is closed.
