Right now, there seems to be an awful lot of talk surrounding a new batch of consoles. Nintendo's NX is rumoured to launch at the end of the year, rumours and leaks surrounding the PS4K have really picked up steam and Microsoft itself has willingly talked about the possibility of newer, more capable hardware. Now, Gamestop's COO is jumping in on the conversation, claiming that we will have new consoles quite soon.
It is common practise for a retail chain to have access to early information surrounding upcoming releases. There is also reason to believe that the recent massive PS4K leak on NeoGAF came from a retail source, so if new hardware is arriving this year, Gamestop's COO could well know a bit about it.
Speaking at a recent investor day, Gamestop's COO (via Forbes) said: “Although we have not modelled extensive growth for new innovation in this presentation, we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumoured new console launches, some of which seem imminent”.
He didn't outright say new consoles were coming, nor did he specify from which companies but given recent rumours, it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to assume that he means either the Nintendo NX or PS4K, or maybe both. Either way, E3 is right around the corner so we may get more information then.
KitGuru Says: Retail chains are often a source of pre-release information on things like this. At this point, it seems fairly likely that Sony is working on a hardware refresh and while Nintendo has been a bit more secretive about the NX, that could also be coming out this year.
