Fresh Nvidia GTX 1080 image finds its way online

A couple of weeks back, we got out first look at what could be the new cooler design for Nvidia's upcoming series of Pascal graphics cards. At the time, the image was of a ‘work in progress' model but now a snap of the final product appears to have found its way onto the web, just ahead of the rumoured June reveal for three upcoming Pascal GPUs.

The image comes from the Chinese site Baidu and apparently shows Nvidia's new angled design for its reference cooler, which will appear on the GTX 1080. Videocardz took a good look at the cooler and figured out that the screws do not align with what can be found on the current batch of Maxwell graphics cards so it wouldn't make for a good mod.

So unless someone got really bored and physically created their own fake Nvidia GPU cooler, it looks like this could be the real deal. Obviously, this is still all unconfirmed though so take it with a healthy dose of scepticism.

Right now it is currently rumoured that the upcoming GTX 1080 will come with a GP104 chip and make its début at Computex at the end of May/beginning of June. There will apparently be two other GPUs also launching alongside it. As for video memory, it looks like we may be seeing a return to GDDR5 or possibly GDDR5X, with HBM 2 rumoured to be reserved for future high-end cards, like a new Titan.

KitGuru Says: It seems that every week we have a little bit more information surrounding Pascal. Are any of you waiting to upgrade to the new series of GPUs?

  1. Pretty awesome fake if it is one. But what I don’t get…

Why would someone have just the housing but not the actual gpu that goes with it? That was very fishy before with the first pics, and it’s just as fishy now… The old pic that was posted showed less of the housing- as if it took this person more time to finish the rest of this, then posted this new one.

So by that logic, I am guessing this very well could be fake… 6040% something like that, now have a good un!

  2. My guess would be that the cooling shrouds and the actual PCB are manufactured at different locations, you are right though, this could still turn out to be some kind of ruse.

  3. No need for me to upgrade. I got a GTX 980. I got a long time to wait for next gen HBM2 GPU, or at least a GDDR5X Titan.

  4. everyone who owns a 390 or 980 + now won’t need to upgrade till flagships come out later on with hbm2.

it looks like the current cover if it was rendered on a playstation one…i.e. pointy polygons and a complete lack of smoothly curved surfaces

  7. Ah I never considered that, very interesting.

All those official looking papers in the shot, to make it look more legit is also fishy. This design looks cool though, so hopefully it’s the real deal.

  8. I love people saying no need for me to upgrade since I have a 980… I know you guys want that upgrade hehehe

  9. I hate the fact that there’s a short supply of HBM2 right now. To add insult to injury, they’re not even releasing the Titans any time soon. I can understand that the majority of the population wants these exact cards (1080/1070), but what about us gaming enthusiasts that want the best of the best?

  11. No”need” sure, but there are plenty of cases where 4gb of vram is a bottleneck.

  12. The card pictured is way too long for having HBM2…

  13. Sure, if you aren’t an enthusiast gamer and still game at 1080P. For us real gamers who game at UWQHD and WQHD resolutions, no less than a GTX980Ti will do 😉

  14. Source that says the Titan won’t be released soon?

  15. I’m just making an educated guess. They discontinued the 970, 980, and 980 Ti and are coming out with replacements for those but there is no mention or even rumor that the Titan will be released initially. I predict that the possibility is very low that they come out with Titan on launch or even in 2016

  16. To add to that though, if they DO come out with the Titans early enough.. I will love NVIDIA forever.

  17. I will be buying a 3440×1440 monitor in the end of the year. I am staying with my 1080p monitor right now cuz I am really confused on where the market is headed to – if I invest in G-Sync monitor, I pay very expensive price and id be stuck with Nvidia (no good), on the other hand if I go FreeSync, might be a better choice, cuz it’s free, but that also means, if I still keep buying NVD GPUs, I’d be getting no variable refresh rate feature. Perhaps if u give me an advice on that using some “magic ball of the future” I might shoot for one of the high end monitors and upgrade more frequently.

  18. It would be truly a bottleneck if I shoot for a Wide monitor with 3440×1440 resolution. Right now it is unnoticeable at 1080p. I guess the whole “upgrade” for me now would be determined by whoever wins in FPS when Star Citizen launches, and together with that goes VR.

  19. I know, this is bad, but we can’t do anything. It’s technology and yields. I would love to have a Pascal card, but if they won’t be such big successors to the GM200, then id better give it a wait with what I got now.

  20. For sure, we might just say GTC 2017. The current 1000 series cards would be just a replacement, or let’s just say, “successor” to the GM204 (GTX 970, 980), just like the GM204 being successor to the GK104 (or GTX680).

  21. I’m stuck with Nvidia as I have a G-sync monitor. The monitor is great, so is the tech, but I have to cross my fingers Nvidia doesnt drop the ball for the next few years.

  22. Agreed. Even if they have GDDR5X, I’ll just wait for the HBM2 version (16GB).

  23. You should watch out on what you will be upgrading from now on. Perhaps your next Nvidia card may be the last one you would buy…
