Sony to reject any PlayStation VR games that drop below 60 fps

There has been a lot of talk about the PlayStation 4 and its ability to run games at the frame rates and resolution required for virtual reality. However, Sony is holding developers up to very high standards and has openly said that should any game dip below 60 frames per second on the PlayStation VR, it will be rejected by the company.

Frame rate is extremely important to virtual reality as dropping below a certain level will cause motion sickness. While PC VR headsets are aiming for 90 frames per second consistently, Sony is giving developers 60fps, 90fps and 120fps options for their games but they must ensure no frame drops under any circumstances.

As Gamasutra reports, Sony had a presentation at the Game Developers Conference this week going over some of its guidelines and requirements for VR: “Frame rate is really important; you cannot drop below 60 frames per second, ever. If you submit a game to us and it drops to 55, or 51…we’re probably going to reject it.”

“I know I’m going to get flak for this, but there’s no excuse for not hitting frame rate. It’s really hard, and I’m not going to lie to and say it’s extremely easy…it’s really difficult. 60hz is the minimum acceptable framerate. Everybody drill that into your heads.”

KitGuru Says: It is great to see Sony pushing developers to strive for higher frame rates. If only we could get them to do that for all games, rather than just for virtual reality.

  3. So… if they aim for 60 fps in VR (which requires double the performance because you are using 2 screens) that why can they only do 30 fps in standard mode on most games? If they can do 60 in VR then they should be able to do 120 in standard.
