As much as Call of Duty is one of the most enduring franchises of the past decade, it does also command quite an emotional reaction from its supporters. When the recent Infinite Warfare trailer dropped, fans of the series took it upon themselves to downvote it en masse, but publisher Activision has brushed it off, saying that they did this with Black Ops 2's trailer too.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's final reveal trailer showed up earlier this week, after several teaser trailers and a leak of the final version appeared online previously. It showed the game taking place in a near-future space age, where jets, soldiers and space craft battle it out in low-Earth-orbit, with futuristic weapons and manoeuvring technology.
It's that emphasis on sci-fi that has some fans annoyed. They would prefer it if the series took a step back into contemporary warfare, or even went back to World War I or II, where Call of Duty has its roots. Others however seem annoyed that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare remastering will only be made available to those who buy the special editions of Infinite Warfare.
It won't be available anywhere else.
This backlash has led to trailers for Infinite Warfare receiving hundreds of thousands of dislikes on Youtube. At the time of writing the full length one has over 400,000 of them, compared with 195,000 likes (thanks EG). [yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeF3UTkCoxY']
Addressing this fall out in an earnings call was Activision CEO, Eric Hishberg, who said that the number of likes were a strong indication of the title being polarising, rather than unanimously hated. He also highlighted how the re-release of Modern Warfare was designed to appeal to those who want more of the “boots on the ground,” gameplay. Infinite Warfare is for those that want something new, he said.
Perhaps more importantly for an earnings call though, he highlighted how “early pre-orders [of Infinite Warfare] are off to a very strong start,” and that Black Ops 2 had a large number of dislikes when it was unveiled.
Looking at the stats for it though, Black Ops 2's trailer has 158,000 likes at the time of writing, but only 59,000 dislikes. While it may be that Call of Duty has a larger and more passionate fan base today than it did then, clearly Infinite Warfare has been more divisive with the CoD community than previous entries in the series.

KitGuru Says: I've not really gotten into a shooter for many years at this point, so I'm not a great judge. What do you think of Infinite Warfare? Does it look like a fun entry in the series?
What I see, is that they are trying to get ahead of *Titanfall 2*. *Advanced Warfare* and *Ops 3* ripped off Titanfall’s wall running to begin with. Since they can’t takes mech suits, they take spaces ships instead.
The COD series is gonna hit the same wall as Guitar Heroes at some point. They are just trying to milk it a bit more before that happens.
CoD is a weird one nowadays. CoD fans hate it because they’re following a natural progression and non-CoD fans hate it because it’s still branded as a Call of Duty game. Can we just slow down for a second and look at the game for what it is, and see if it’s good in it’s own right?
What I see, is Activision finally giving the consumers what they want after years of being told they make the exact same old shit every year, only to receive further backlash that they tried something new for once.
Yeah I guess there is some truth to that. I don’t mind sci-fi at all (I know some people hate it for some odd reason). But we shall see. I still have a hard time believing they are doing something new besides the setting of the “plot” until I see some actually gameplay. For all we know we will just get more BO3 like gamplay with new maps.
Call of Duty has become a franchise with a serious identity crisis. It’ primarily a ego-shooter, but wants to be more than that. In all effort it fails because of the sensationalism it tries to achieve. The plot was never believable and the action got more and more ridiculous .. even close to utter unrealistic.
The trailer is a good sign of this. The first minute or so, you can see this very clearly. There are scenarios which you expect from a once military shooter. Then the player jumps into the jet and it goes into space??? WTF!!!! It’s like Activision and Infinity Ward wanted to throw different games together and named it “Call of Duty” because the usual buyer sheeps, who buy their games nonetheless. They are under pressure, but too arrogant to accept the angry fans to revolt.
Used to love these kinds of games back in the delta force era. Anyone remember black hawk down? good times.
Then fallout 3 came out and I just crave something deeper now then mindless pvp with angry kids.
Anyways, it’s interesting that for the first time in ages, CoD and Battlefield are doing completely different eras. Battlefield is back to basics with WWI and CoD is doing the battlefield 2042 thing. My money is on Battlefield to win this round, but we’ll see.

This isnt Call of Duty, This is the PRequel to Halo with the UNSC vs the Insurrectionists
Black Ops 2 still had more likes than dislikes but with Infinite Warfare this is clearly a sign, all I here from people nowadays are how they’re sick of Call of Duty’s take on the future and they just want to go back to a historical setting (such as World War II) but Activision are too stupid to listen, I’m sure I’ll love Infinite Warfare and I thought Black Ops 3 was pretty good but I’m sick shit of this setting and I want change in this franchise at least a modern day setting or something!
They’ve been gradually moving forward in time as they go, so I can’t say it’s especially surprising. Considering the game will have the same premise of shooty shooty bang bang from all previous iterations of CoD since the dawn of time… can’t really understand all of the hate.
This series died with Ghost in MW2 era
