Indie developers want Nintendo to give NX more power

As much as the Wii U hasn't turned out to be anywhere near as successful as Nintendo's previous generations of home-console, developers did like making games for it. The only thing they really want with the next-generation NX though, is more power.

We don't know a lot about Nintendo's NX. Although there has been a lot of interest in the system since we first heard its name, Nintendo has kept it under raps in order to avoid its upcoming release cannibalising Wii U sales. The rumour at the moment is that it will have PS4-like performance, but that's still up in the air.

Developers are hoping for a bit more than that though. Interviewed in a recent issue of GamesTM, a number of developers from the likes of DrinkBox, Rebellion, Black Forest and Zen Studios, all said they wanted more power from the system than the Wii U offered when it was launched.

“I believe that the limited power of the system made it difficult for some third parties to bring their games from PS4/Xbox One to the Wii U, causing the system to have less than ideal third-party support,” said Graham Smith, CEO at DrinkBox (via NintendoEverything). He went on to say that he hoped Nintendo would correct that with the NX.

Rebellion's co-founder Chris Kingsley agreed, stating that he hoped the NX would come with more power than both the Xbox One and PS4, but with familiar inputs for developers to work with. Adrian Goersch of Black Forest games said the same, though also stated that he'd like to see a better submission process from Nintendo.

The general consensus at the moment is that we'll see some form of Polaris GPU in the next-gen system. Considering that generation of AMD hardware looks to make itself more affordable though, rather than up the performance ante, perhaps we won't see a big jump in power from Nitnendo's next-gen system.

KitGuru Says: What would you like the NX to deliver? I use my Wii U as a great media centre system and the tablet is really handy, but as a gaming machine I spent the majority of my time on Monster Hunter Ultimate. Since then it's not had much use for gaming.

  1. Why? So they can make the same shadow side scroller over and over again? I don’t think you need more “power” for that.

  2. Any new console should at least least match the now several year old ps4 and Xbox 1

  3. i pretty sure any gaming system is powerful enough to run indie games.

  4. not always just that, but sometimes it’ll allow cutting down on loading times, better textures or animations, or could allow more scope for gameplay.. or because it’ll be easier to port from PC or other consoles without stressing budgets. like, rebellion listed up there makes the sniper elite series, which does have a fair bit of detail, drinkbox makes guacamelee, which has a lot of assets and graphical tricks for a 2d game and zen makes detailed pinball simulations

  5. I think that a big performance jump is actually a part of how they intend to make graphics more affordable. You just need to look at the full context about their statements around affordability. They were talking about making VR a lot more affordable in order to grow the Total Addressable Market for VR. VR requires a lot of power, so to make it affordable to the mainstream market then their mainstream cards need to be a lot more powerful than their current ones.

  6. It depends on the indie game. Some indie games push the hardware more than others.

  7. Not all indie devs and their games are the same. There are a lot of indie games that are more demanding than that.

  8. “Indie” stands for “Independant; not run by a publisher. It doesn’t not mean “shit graphics”.

  9. *few

    Few year old.

  10. i didn’t say “shity graphics”, most indie developer usually stay to high res. 2d, while others do basic 3d.

  12. the witcher games, not that they’re relevant

  13. Good timing – now that the ps4 and (likely) xbone are getting upgrades….

  14. oh yea, never played but there alot of details.

  15. Not going to happen…Nx isn`t about using highend-hardware and selling that “for free” or 99 dollars as others do…and then wonder why their hardware performance is so bad in “PC-games” and why its outdated in 3 years after it came out.

  16. 90% of Indie-games currently use simply lazy 2D-games…How does that make your statement right?

Just because 10% are not using simple 2D-games?

Did you forget? “Shovelknight”, an 8 bit 2D-Indie-game…is one of the most successfull Indie-games last year!

Lol. You can run that on a toaster-hardware.

And no, just because 10% of those guys want “4 x 4 Ghz Arm-cores” (i heard some idiot talking about that in some forum xD) it does´t mean it`s gonna be done.

Too bad. These Indies should ever stuck to WiiU…or forget about their “plans”.

The same goes for idiot-developers “Slightly Mad Studios” btw.

NX is not going to be more powerful than WiiU (which they thought/hoped for).

They can FORGET putting their game on ANY Nintendo-console now.

Too bad. They can fuck themselves now. They only have themselves to blame.

Well no wonder: they never really INTENDED to make a WiiU-game.

I am banning them completely from my Miiverse-account 😉 They no longer DESERVE anything to see from me.
