Oculus might have become the first to launch a Pixar-esque 360 degree movie with Henry, Lost and Invasion, but Disney isn't going to sit on its laurels. To get its virtual ball rolling, it's released Disney Movies VR, a steam-accessible VR experience that offers a number of different content to enjoy with your headset.
It does only support the HTC Vive for now, in seated and standing modes, though we would expect Oculus Rift support in the future. However whether you actually want to try it out – even if it is free – remains to be seen, as early reviews for the service are not strong. [yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzZcO566WKE']
The content offered is a Disney hub world, whereby you can jump into various content from multiple recent movies like Jungle Book, Star Wars: The Force Awakens or Captain America: Civil War. Each of those however is said to be quite limited according to early reviewers. They claim low frames per second video is juddery and nausea inducing and audio often goes out of sync.
Essentially, a bunch of content has been quickly adapted for virtual reality – which is never a good thing. However, what is exciting is that the hub-environment that Disney has created is said to be top notch, AAA grade CGI. Disney will be able to make some stunning VR content, it just might take some time.
This is the beginning though, as likely now we can expect more VR content and 360 degree video from Disney in the near future.
