GTX 1080 benchmark leaks, Nvidia confirms live event this Friday

Nvidia has officially confirmed that it will be holding a “special event” this Friday the 6th of May, coinciding with reports that it would be officially unveiling two new Pascal graphics cards this week. While previous reports indicated that this event may be for press only, it turns out that Nvidia will be holding its own public livestream on Twitch.tv/Nvidia, so everyone can see it for themselves. On top of that, some benchmark results for the GTX 1080 appear to have leaked.

On the eve of Nvidia's announcement, some 3DMark11 and FireStrike Extreme benchmark results for the GTX 1080 have been posted online by videocardz, confirming 8GB of GDDR5X memory and giving us a rough idea of what the GP104 is capable of.

3DMark 11 is rendered at 1280×720, the GTX 1080 garnered up a graphics score of 27,683, which is a bit faster than some GM200 cards. In Firestrike Extreme, which is rendered at 2560×1440, the GTX 1080 got a graphics score of 10,102, while a GTX 980Ti would typically score around 8,700 points. Going off of these numbers, it would seem that the GTX 1080 will be replacing the 980Ti with stronger performance.

That said, these are early numbers and we don't know if the card will perform just as well in games so there is still a lot left for us to find out once these cards make their way into the hands of reviewers.

KitGuru Says: It seems that everyone will be finding out about the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 at the same time tomorrow. Will you be tuning in for the livestream? What do you think of the leaked GTX 1080 benchmark results?

  3. The rumors seem correct. Both NV and AMD are focused on mainstream instead of high end for the initial releases this early summer. AMD seems to have not expected this, they were expecting NV to focus on high end based on reading I’ve done on the net. So this is going to be very interesting and likely lead to a price war. That’s the good part of this.
I am betting the reason why they focused on mainstream is also due to not so perfect yields as TSMC still probably hasn’t perfected 1614 enough yet.

I was hoping for beefy powerful new cards, but buying a card a little stronger then a 980Ti for much less then it used to cost can work too! Bring on the price wars! My 7870 needs to be retired. Envy of your friends 5 years ago and now it’s crap. Gosh I love technology! =D, no really I do! It’s worth it, the progress is worth it!

Everyone with a 980 is probably going to yawn later today with this reveal though. They won’t have a good reason to upgrade *unless rich* until 10nm at this rate =x

Where did you get 10,102 from? The original article says 8959 on Firestrike extreme for the 1080, marginally better.. And at 1.8Ghz (same clock speed as the 1080) the 980Ti gets 14432..

  6. Looking forward to seeing the factory OCed Pascals from Nvidia’s many partners, this will be what makes our custom gaming rig shop very busy, thank you Nvidia.

For my personal rig I will be waiting for Big Power Pascal with HBM2 whatever Nvidia decides to call it, the sooner they unleash this Pascal beast chip the better.
