AMD accidentally lists Radeon RX 490 on website

Right now, AMD is focusing on dominating the mid-range GPU market with the launch of the RX 480, with the RX 460 and RX 470 set to also hit the market soon. However, there will be higher-end cards on the way eventually and this week, AMD accidentally outed the RX 490 on its website briefly.

The listing wasn't up for long but the evidence was preserved by a user on Reddit beforehand. The RX 490 was listed as a card eligible as part of a key redeem program, which is running between February and the end of December this year, suggesting that perhaps the RX 490 will come out in 2016.

AMD-Ellesmere-RX-480-4

Interestingly though, there is some talk of the RX 490 possibly being a dual-GPU card, featuring two full-blown Polaris 10 chips on a single PCB. This rumour (via wccftech) is based on Zauba listings and the fact that the board that is currently believed to be the RX 490 has a similar codename and value to the test board for Gemini, which went on to become the Radeon Pro Duo. It isn't much to go on so don't put too much stock in that rumour.

The reasoning behind the RX 490 not being a Vega GPU hinges on the fact that certification for the board came prior to AMD hitting its Vega milestone recently. Once again, keep in mind that a lot of this is speculative and far from being fact right now.

KitGuru Says: While AMD launching an RX 490 would not be surprising news, making it a dual-GPU would seem like an odd step. After all, it seemed like AMD was taking a step back from dual-GPUs with the Radeon Pro Duo, which was only made available through very select channels and geared for professional use, rather than consumer use. Either way, most of this is speculation for now, the only thing we really know is that AMD's accidental listing points towards an RX 490 existing, beyond that, we will just have to wait and see.

  1. I sincerely hope they integrate HBM into Polaris and have an AIO water cooler, much like the FuryX, as opposed to a dual-card solution.

  2. a duel chip card actually wouldn’t be a weird step at all, Vega is out next year so it would make sense to put out a product that can fill a similar role in the mean time, I honestly expect the 490 to be a duel chip 470 so no matter what with Vega, the 490 would be behind (small Vega is rumored to be 64 CU’s full fat) but it would still be an absolute beast. My other pet theory of the 490 is that it is full fat Polaris 10 on 16nm allowing higher clockspeeds, is watercooled and has 1 8 pin plus 1 6 pin, the higher Zauba listing value is because that silicon is in short supply presently

If the dual chip card is > performance than 1080 and $100 CHEAPER then it’s a HUGE win for AMD.

  4. I didn’t expect such an idea [in the mainstream] till Navi (scalability), I think AdoredTV mentioned this too… if the Scorpio/PS4 hardware is multigpu, then it might all make a bit more sense

  5. Cuz that was so successful with the Fury X…

  6. Until you see first hand how much trouble AMD has with CFX drivers. Prepare yourself for stuttering, flickering and disabling it entirely and often.

  8. It has no more or fewer issues then sli

  9. HBM is way too expensive and too little capacity for polaris 10, GDDR5X is a much better option however still costly and would require more CU’s to make full use of it.

  10. The consoles wont use multiple GPUs, they have no need to.

  11. The addition of hbm would require a much larger chip size to fit everything. Polaris is a 233mm chip, Fiji was twice the size.

  12. Never had a problem with crossfire…

Same thing here, only had problems when I was trying launch games reputed to be worse with crossfire (just for see). For stuterring, I’m agree in one way : when you use crossfire (2x HD7870GHz stock speed) with amd cpu (fx 8150 for me) it seem to create stuttering and crossfire don’t deliver that much performances (on bf4 was running at 40~80 fps no stable at all with stuttering on ultra/Hight/medium and even on low setting, to compare my i7-6700K with same crossfire deliver 90~120+ fps on ultra with no stuttering at all, permit me to play somes games at 4K (just have to change Textures&Shadows to a value that 2GB permit))

And for the bi-GPU based RX490, I don’t think so, just cause of Vulkan/DX12 that let developers tell how to use cfx/sli, if he didn’t game will just use one card, and just one card not like in OGL/DX11 (user can force use crossfire in drivers). So until developers don’t implement bi-GPU methods in their game engine, we can say it’s something like take a gun, aim you feat and shoot for pleasure, AMD don’t need that. Or maybe they know something we ignore and almost all games will support it in a near future

  15. 490 might be the start of dual gpu cards for mid range performance segment, if 2 480 can compete in crossfire with the 1080 at around 200 watts for a dual set up, that would be realistically a night mare for NVidia. take 2 470’s that could compete with 1070 at say 130 watts?

  16. I would greatly enjoy dual chip GPU’s being priced in the mid range segment though I don’t think a duel 480 would draw only 200 watts, maybe 250 to 260, but the price tag would be low enough anyway that it would be highly competitive against the 1080. I do think that AMD is gearing up to a greatly many chipped card future, it would make sense for them to try to start it now. I would also greatly enjoy if AMD for some insane reason released a dual chip Polaris 11 card to slot in between the 470 and 460, sure there is no logical reason for it to exist (unless such a weird beast was released for $150), but think of the doors that would open for people with limited budgets for understanding higher end systems so they would have the confidence to go with a higher end system with a duel chip card

  17. I didn’t have any issues with my 390’s at all.

  19. the suspense is killer to see what they drop for 490

  20. I’m probably going to trade up to a 490 when I upgrade my system using Summit Ridge, the big question is when all of this will be

  21. Way more. Go look at Pro Duo review @ pcper.com

  22. the 200 series that use XDMA have no where close to the stutter etc so i would not base on that thought process, I ran duel 7870 for awhile as well, I never had problems with anything other then they ran hot cause not enough airflow to feed both very well, but the performance was awesome in all games I played, and yes certain titles do not play well with CF and even SLI(which has usually less scaling performance) DX12/Vulkan will be “fixing this” more to AMD benefit then Nvidia for multi-gpu use.

  23. Fiji also had more shaders etc, so of course it a bigger chip, but HBM version one at 4gb when they did not seem to get expected performance out of it would be what stops me from thinking that is a good idea, not the chip size which has very little to do with it the do all the fancy wiring on the interposer dont forget vs standard wring they used with the GDDR5/5x, and 5x is NOT a better option, as they both quite expensive vs run of the mill GDDR5, and no you dont need more CU to use faster memory Paul that is a load of bull, it is based on way they built nothing more, if they can use 5, they can use 5x simple as that.

  24. The actual on-die size of each of Fiji’s 1024-bit HBM memory controllers was roughly the same as the actual on-die size of each of Tonga’s 64-bit GDDR memory controllers. A Polaris 10 chip with all the same resources and HBM would be very, very close in physical size to a Polaris 10 chip with GDDR.

Fiji was twice the size because it was almost twice the GPU.

  25. Until you realize that most sites have already reported that dual 480s don’t even match a 1070 in most games and a single 480 uses over 160 watts how is a dual 480 going to use only 200 watts? Guess it’s always possible. Let’s just wait for benches before we start assuming.

  26. what the fuck have you been smoking? paired they’ve been beating the 1070 and shy of 1080 by at most 10 fps.
don’t tell me B.S. like this when I have seen the bench marks you fucking idiot.

  27. http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2507-crossfire-rx-480-benchmark-vs-1070-and-1080-power-temperatures-fps/page-5 – actually read a lot of articles, and most agree with this one, they trade blows, but since i’am an idiot that didn’t check benchmarks I guess I don’t know what i’am talking about. PS. You are a big guy speaking from behind your computer. Guarantee you don’t talk to people like that in person do you? Man you are real mature. No where is it a ‘nightmare’ for nvidia, unless you are a blind fanboy. Do more than just check 1 sight that proves you right, most are saying the same thing. What good is a 2 card setup if it doesn’t play well with all games? Beating the 1070 in some doesn’t mean it destroys the 1070, which works in all games with no profiles needed. The fact of the matter is you can rely on 1 card more than 2, the 1070 uses less power than 1 480, and it’s cheaper than 2 8 gb 480s (well, when people stop price gouging lol). I’ve done sli/cf in the past, it’s not great. Also there are instances that the 480 cf beats the 1070 but frame times suck. FPS with shitty stuttering isn’t a win.

  28. when 10 fps behind a 1080 and a 1070 is getting beat by most benches by 20 30 frames…….go blow smoke up some one elses ass i aint your monkey.

  29. With shitty frame times and stutter. And no it’s not most benchmarks. FPS isn’t everything, if you knew what you were talking about you’d know that. All you fanboys care about is that high FPS number on a table. If they don’t show frame times and lag spikes, those tables mean nothing. You are quick to call people names when you have next to no facts. Fanboys like you are toxic to the community. The fact is dual anything is never better than a one card solution because until it works well in every game then it’s hit or miss, just like most reviews state. And as far as being a monkey, you are acting like one.

  30. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30JCdZFDBBM – notice the minumum framerates are a lot lower than a single 1070
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1DjywkP7yU – look at the stutter, but I guess that’s better cause fps?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqnj5O7F8W4 – Again, look at the stutter.
Can find more that’s just a simple search on google.

  31. It was! Fury X is on the league of the Titan-X, a card with 300% more VRAM, 50% more ROPs and more than 3 times its price.

  32. cherry pick somemore fucktard. your Nvidia shillling trying to blow smoke up my ass, aint going to work. and a oops
even a slightly biased Nvidia reveiwer, recomends Rx480………https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVVJPbFRDEc

now please go the fuck away your bs won’t work.

  33. You are full of shit, RX 480 in cross fire beat gtx 1070 and is in par with gtx 1080.

  34. I show you multiple sources and you show me one? And I’am the one cherry picking? Ok then. And nice going back to name calling again that the problem with you fanboys your toxic. Took you a while to respond too must of had to scour the net for one link. Believe what you want though but two cards and have fun when they don’t both work in every game.

  35. Uh, no not always just a few games there are multiple sites showing that but believe what you want. Two 480s are definitely not on par with a 1080 in 95 percent of games.

  36. Are you retarded or something? He says at 10 minutes into the video he DOESN’T recommend 2 cheaper cards over a single higher end card, unless you are an enthusiast and don’t mind glitching textures and other crossfire issue. Fuck me, do you even watch your own links? You look pretty stupid right now.

  37. io showed you a Nvidia biasded reveiwer.

  38. No, you showed me a video that apparently shows the 480 being recommended over what exactly? I’am merely talking about crossfire 480s. I never once said the card wasn’t any good, nor did I ever say 2 480s wouldn’t work in all games, only that it’s not recommended to go dual crossfire, or sli for that matter, over a single card solution. How many games do crossfire 480s work in? Not all of them, in some they work great, in some they don’t work at all, and some they have a negative impact. What games does the 1070 work in? All of them for the most part. Anyways, next time maybe read comments fully before you start name calling you look silly. 480 single card is fine, but crossfire sucks, and a 490, if it is dual 480s, will have the same caveats as two 480s. Just look at the pro duo, and any other dual gpu card either company has released. If you only play the few games they work well with, then all the power to you. I would rather have had AMD release a decent single gpu card that competes with the 1070/1080 as it would most likely be priced better, and bring the prices of nvidia cards down. More competition is better.

  39. two 480’s in crossfire is a bit shit tho lets be honest, the heat coming from your pc is going to start global warming 2.0

  40. two rx 480’s in crossfire is a stupid idea, but you know what you go buy two on them and realise that for yourself

  41. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no_NBTivfgY If only this card was SLI capable. However for single card results, this video proves volumes about the Nvidia Pascal architecture. I have High hopes for NAVI when AMD releases that next year… (maybe). Other wise i would not defend this meager and barley acceptable generation of AMD cards. It’s from the same reviewer too, so it should be relevant to you. 🙂
