Quake Champions may push you to buy a new monitor

Microsoft and Sony spent much of this latest generation of consoles trying to convince us that it was a good thing that they could only put out 30 frames per second in most games, but that's not something id software agrees with for Quake Champions. It wants to push such high-speed play, a 120Hz monitor might be required to give yourself a competitive edge.

The reason id is going so hard with the speed of play in Quake Champions, is because it wants to develop a thriving professional scene with the shooter and that means catering to the highest levels of play. Although many gamers may not be able to spot much of a difference between 60 FPS and 120 FPS, the pros can and you'll need hardware that supports a high refresh rate if you want to take advantage of it.

“It's everything from input sampling of the mouse to making sure that your monitor refresh rate is fast enough,” said id creative director, Tim Willits in a chat with GameSpot. “Because even with Quake Live, we have found throughout the years that going from 30 to 60 is huge, but even 60 to 120–is noticeable.” [yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa-6fQyNkZo']

MOBA players have also been credited with playing at lower-game-detail settings in order to coax out a few more frames per second to give them a better look at what's really going on in the game and in the fast paced world of competitive shooters, that is equally important.

Because of that, Quake Champions is going to be a PC exclusive, because the consoles simply cannot put out the frame rates that are required for 120Hz play. While Willits did say that the game would play on a variety of PCs and not everyone would need to have high-end graphics cards and monitors to be able to hit those sorts of frame rates, the option will be there for those able and willing to take advantage of it.

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.

  1. I don’t know why he’s being so cautious when describing the difference between 60FPS and 120FPS. Visually it’s a lot more of an improvement to that of 30->60
