Pokémon Go has a tracking system again! Sort of…

Removing the three step tracking system entirely from Pokémon Go was one of the worst received moves in recent game developer history. Fans were really not impressed, but it's good to see Niantic has responded quickly by releasing a newly revamped tracking system in its early stages of development.

You may not have access to it just yet though, as the sightings and nearby update has only been applied to a subset of users while Niantic tests its functionality. However the reports so far are actually quite good. The tracker now lets you know when a Pokémon is in the grass tufts not far from you, or located near a Pokéstop.

Checking the tracker panel opens up a list of nearby Pokéstops and some of the Pokémon you can expect to find there. If you select any of them, it will show you roughly on the map where to find them. Non Pokéstop linked, nearby Pokémon are also highlighted, though without a specific direction.

The new system has also done away with duplicate Pokémon, so you don't find yourself trying to discover the four Pidgeys in your area. As Kotaku points out, it's all still a little vague, but Niantic is continuing to work working on it, so more improvements could come along soon.

The new tracking feature isn't all that arrived with the latest update. Although not everyone may have the new tracking feature, everyone should now see dialogue if they try to drive or travel faster than a certain speed; curveballs should now be more accurate; Nice, Great and Excellent throws should grant the correct experience bonuses; battery saver bugs have been fixed and the feature re-enabled and there are new visuals for the three team leaders.

KitGuru Says: It's about time Niantic added some sort of tracking feature. It was bizarre that it removed the original one entirely without a replacement ready to go, but that's par for the course with Niantic: it doesn't tell us much at all.

  1. It was gone for 2 weeks and everyone is acting like they’ve just done a life sentence. I like this game but holy hell people need to chill tf out

  2. Considering only the United States and the UK – for two days – had the 3 step tracking system actually working it really hasn’t bothered me all that much. Adding to that while the new system is pretty cool it doesn’t really change much for those who live in more quiet areas where Pokestops are scarce so I think some kind of rough directional cue or pinpointing a large area at least would be a nice improvement.

In any case a games launch is perhaps the most important time for judging its success and longevity in the market so if this effort doesn’t end up working properly it could put a good risk on many others leaving. Still, it’s nice to see them actually making the effort

  3. Making this game even more Urban friendly… rural players weep.

  4. Well, at least they’re trying to do something. Still a few major things they need to fix though.

    1. The constant really poor fps, sometimes it’s almost unusable on my Galaxy S4, while my friends iPhone 6 (similarly specced compared to S4) has no lag problems at all. I’m almost considering getting an iPod touch and tethering to my phone it’s that horrible. I mean come on, it’s hardly a taxing game yet its fps is poor and battery consumption is way too high (i can last 2 days normally off a single charge, yet i barely last 2 hours while in the game).

    2. More customisation options, it’s really limited, and while theres no real need to have fallout 4 like customisability, just enough to make your trainer unique would be cool.

    3. Do something about cheaters. I mean where the hell are people getting so many 2100+ snorlaxes and now arcanines from? I go out round the city for an hour at breaks and ive yet to see a snorlax and neither have my colleagues. I know they come from 10K eggs, of which ive had 4 and my colleages have had a few too and ive had the best hatch of a cp125 dratini. Find it hard to believe so many people happen to get 2100 snorlaxes etc out of their eggs and i really doubt they found them that high either.

    4. Fix the distribution of pokemon. All areas should have the same available pokemon. Water types more common around water and grass type in long grass areas etc, but all types should be available everywhere. At my home village ive only ever seen pidgeys, zubats, ratattas, spearows and weedles. While good for leveling up, it gets boring catching the same shit which isnt going to get me anything really cool.

    5. Maybe more incubators (2 perma maybe?). I’ll use up my incubators on 2k eggs (saving the 10k ones for higher levels) then ill find myself hatching a single 2k egg at a time, get a new egg from a stop, only to find its another 2k egg thats gonna take another days work break to get rid of.
