UK Retailers say sub £200 price essential for Nintendo NX success

Nintendo is looking to put itself back on the map next year with the launch of the NX. However, it will be a tough fight given the popularity of the Xbox One and PS4 right now. Now a group of UK-based games retailers have weighed in on Nintendo’s options, saying that a sub £200 price point will be “essential” to the console’s success.

In a survey conducted by MCV, UK retailers seemed to agree that Nintendo needs to heavily undercut the current prices of the Xbox One and PS4, which tend to sell between £250 and £300 at the moment.

Nintendo NX Concept

One major buyer who took part in the survey told MCV that the “games industry sorely misses a strong Nintendo” and that the NX could be “exactly what the market needs”. If the price can be kept down, then the NX could get off to a stronger start than the 3DS and the Wii U.

Right now, Nintendo is being very quiet on the NX, though a recent leak pointed towards it packing an Nvidia Tegra SoC for horsepower. The leak also corresponded with previous reports that the NX would double as a portable device, with detachable controllers and a dock for when you want to play on the TV.

KitGuru Says: If Nintendo can get the price for the NX below £200, then it could end up being a huge seller, like the 3DS. However, I do wonder how feasible that price point would be. If the Nintendo NX ended up costing less than £200, would you buy one? Do you think Nintendo needs to undercut the Xbox One and PS4 to sell well?

  1. It all depends on the games. Sure, it helps if the thing is cheaper, but Nintendo’s biggest problem for me was most of the games on the Wii(U) just weren’t that interesting. Like so many others, my Wii was just collecting dust. Nintendo needs a stronger line-up of third party games and it needs to start lowering prices of first party games a bit sooner. A console that has a strong line-up of affordable games after a few years is a lot more interesting than a limited and pricey line-up; just stating the obvious.

  2. Agree with Lucas. It’s always been about the games. If they made new games on the old NES cosole, I’d buy it again. Great art is timeless, whereas who still cares about call of duty 2? Nintendo is about art. and it sells well. Mario 3 is still one of the best games of today. You have to be a real schmuck to not like that game. Hand over your gamer license if you don’t like it, seriously HAND IT OVER! YOU ARE UNDER ARREST!

    Having said that–

From TV, to shopping, social media, research, schooling, and of course the best and most games in the world are all on PC… Consoles are obsolete. JOIN US, the master race. We welcome you, comrades.

I now don my Master race monocle and top hat, as I gently but briskly stroke my expensive custom shaved curled mustache. I look down upon the rest of you console peasants… yes.. indeed, look down I tells you… from my mothers basement have a nice day.

  3. Yeah Super Mario 3 was fun back in the day, but none of the new Super Mario games are looking that interesting. Still, i didn’t play it a lot…which is a shame. My father played that thing the whole night i remember.
Anyway broh, as you said Nintendo is an art and hope it continues to be. I played one of Level-5’s games on a dolphin emulator on PC, then they closed their online servers 🙁 that was just bad. I hope they put that one game on the NX or perhaps on mobile devices…it was so fun on PC emulator with a controler….glad the PC platform supports such things though…

    Having said that –

The console peasants you are referring to are actually the “modern teenager console fanboys”. And I can tell you they are the big trouble, simply because so many of them lie, hate, run and hide. And that is only because they can not accept that their system of choice is inferior. An example is a friend of mine who was constatly buying PS4s for 1 single game (Fifa), and every 3 months he broke it somehow randomly. Yes he broke 10 PS4s for less than 2 years. Now that his father won’t buy him more consoles, he plays on PC and accepts his mistaked fanboysm over Sony. Yes that is just an example, and those are the people you should call “console peasants”.

Now come over join Star Citizen and forget all that crap… xD

  4. I actually love CoD2; it was my first 360 game and the best WWII FPS I can remember. Having said that, I’m currently enjoying Pokémon Red on my good old GameBoy 🙂 Thank Nintendo for that.

  5. Pc master race what a load of bollocks I don’t want a stupid pc it doesn’t interest me one bit.

  6. Most of the game’s weren’t that interesting on Wii U what nonsense you just have poor taste in game’s.I think it’s a personal problem on your part.I found Wii U more fun than the boring ps4 I also own.As for affordable game’s the price’s are just fine you’re probably poor if you can’t afford them.I didn’t find the game’s expensive at all.As far as third party game’s most of them are garbage full of game breaking bugs and ripp off dlc.I doubt nintendo will lower the prices of 1st party game’s they keep there value for many years and are highly collectable so dream on.

  7. Nintendo are most likely going to flop with this and possibly seal their own coffin;

    a) They need to bring back 3rd party games. The N64 did great because of 3rd party games mixed in with Nintendo IP’s (got to love some Golden Eye followed by Ocarina of Time). SInce then, they have had almost no 3rd party games and this has limited their market. this leads onto…

    b) Their market is dying. Nintendo has relied on its fans to heavily. Many fans bought Nintendo because of the nostalgia of playing golden oldies, but these guys are growing up and moving on. Nintendo has done nothing to bring in new loyal fans as the Gamecube was a bit of a flop, the WiiU was the biggest flop in history, and the Wii just brought casuals to Nintendo rather than making new fans.

    c) Who the hell wants a portable gaming device?! A £200 phone is pretty damn good at games, and a £700+ one is extremely good. Nintendo seem to be wading into a market area which is already saturated with competition. At least with normal consoles you’re only looking at 2 other competitors.

  8. Chill, dude. No need to make it personal. We’re not talking politics here.

  10. I think you’re wrong about not pulling in new fans, my cousins are about 6 years of age and they’re die hard Mario fans and couldn’t give a shit about PS4 or Xbox. Mario is their religion and they only play Mario games and they’ve been doing so the past few years. I don’t know how long it’ll be before they decide to quit and play CoD or something but one thing’s for sure, Nintendo are making a killing off them and they show no sign of stopping and you can be sure there are kids just like them but you probably haven’t met any

  11. As good as skyrim is on xbone, or pluggystation, it’s much better on PC with superior visuals. And you don’t need a 2000$ pc unless you are doing VR and 4k gaming. The mods are incredible. Over and over, game after game, you can see the games are just the better experience on PC. You might find a few examples like quantum break that doesn’t work so great on pc, but overall again, the PC does the same games better far more often then not.

But for me, the reason PC wins, is not graphics. It’s the gameplay of the vast incredible library of games from new releases of today, to all the way to DOS and even earlier. X-com, for example, the original, is a better game then anything I can find on console today, and that’s just one of the many incredible games the PC has enjoyed over these decades.

And the 2nd biggest reason is the BOOMING indy scene. Phenomenal games like like sub nautica, or 7 days to die, zomboid, the list is truly vast. And when consoles do finally get some of these great indy games later, such as minecraft, they get a gimped version, that can’t be modded, or not modded nearly as much. And unless you are running a potato for a PC, worse visuals then the console counterparts too!

I used to hate PC gaming, back in the days of the N64. In 1996, the N64 actually had better graphics… when I finally got into pc gaming a year later, boy did I see I was wrong.

    TREASURE LEGENDARY EPIC GAMES–
Anyone here play heroes of might and magic 2 or 3? How about Theme Hospital? Or any bullfrog stuff for that matter! Ye olde duke nukem, doom, fallout 1 and 2, age of empires and starcraft, sim this and sim that, heck even THE SIMS. I could go on for hours about the incredible history you xbox players cannot enjoy on your walled off console platforms.

Don’t even get me started on emulation, because I already played windwaker HD a long time before the wii one ever came out!

    SADNESS OF IGNORANCE–
It is very sad, that you console players only care about NEW flashy games with fast action and can’t take the time to learn and appreciate a old PC treasure like MASTER OF MAGIC. That you can’t understand how incredible MORROWIND was on the PC with the legendary mod scene. That you simply refuse to even try one of our many great MMO’s, because your preconceptions about mmo gamers is not a positive one. That you will never know just how deep games could really be, by playing games such as Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.

In sheer wealth of gameplay, available to an old 1997 intel pentium 2 PC will give you access to more incredible gameplay then all the new consoles combined.

But by all means continue being a hater, enjoy your call of duty, sure it’s fun n all, and just be ignorant to the incredible gaming experiences that most of the world never got to see. While PC Master race zealots like me go unloved and undesired by the very same people we are trying to guide to gaming greatness!

Ah well… *sips from my fancy chalice with sparkling soda fit for a king* I’ll see you all later, my mothers basement awaits! EXCELSIOR! WHOOOSH!!!

  12. Nope, Nintendo are making a bit of money off jackass parents who spoil their kids. The sales site they have flopped and the current Mario lineup is very poor. If Nintendo are honestly aiming for infants then they’re screwed.
