Blizzard has been hiring people to maintain support for some of its older games for a while now. Games like Diablo 2 still get updates today to ensure they run on modern operating systems. However, it looks like Blizzard might have something bigger planned, with reports this week claiming that a HD version of the original StarCraft is on the way and could be announced as soon as next month.
This particular rumour came from the Korean news sites, iNews24, so it's definitely not a traditional source of gaming news. However, StarCraft is hugely popular in Korea, so we can't discount it completely. According to the report, Blizzard will be announcing its enhanced version of StarCraft in September, perhaps around the same time as the StarCraft 2 World Championship Series tournament.
StarCraft HD will come with updated graphics, an improved user interface and the original story/gameplay elements of the 1998 version. While an announcement might be coming next month, more details are said to drop at Blizzcon in November, so we may not see much initially and the final release could be some ways off.
KitGuru Says: Blizzard's legacy games are all looked back on fondly but they are difficult for most to pick up and play these days. If Blizzard started updating its older titles with modern graphics, quite a few people would probably be on-board. Would you guys buy a HD version of StarCraft? Would you like to see more HD re-releases down the line?
I see absolutely no reason to buy a HD remaster of Sc1, not when we have the absolutely incredible Mass Recall mod for SC2
Why? Starcraft 2 was a great success and plays incredibly well. Diablo on the other hand could use a HD remake. Diablo 2 HD…..YES PLEASE!
