A Final Fantasy 6 remake could take 20 years to make

Final Fantasy VII is by far the most popular entry in the long running JRPG franchise. It therefore made a great deal of sense when Square Enix announced that they would be remaking the entire game into a trilogy of titles. It seems as though the company has a similar desire to remake the SNES classic Final fantasy 6 – though it could take two decades to do so.

In an interview conducted by French YouTuber Julien Chieze, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s director Naoki Hamaguchi and FF producer Yoshinori Kitase sat down to discuss the upcoming second entry in the PS5 remake.

As part of the lengthy interview, Kitase revealed (as translated by Final Fantasy news page Shinra Archaeology Department) that the Final Fantasy VII remake project has so far taken 10 whole years to arrive at its current position (aka. 2/3rds of the way through the Remake).

Should the team choose to develop a remake of the SNES classic Final Fantasy 6, Kitase states that “it could take double that,” claiming “the game would be bigger than FFVII (Remake project), and it's already got so many characters in it.”

Despite the very lofty ambitions, the producer revealed that “there are a lot of people inside the company who want to remake FFVI” – but unfortunately as of right now the game is not in the works.

Final Fantasy VII is undoubtedly the most popular game in the long-running franchise. That said, of the many 2D entries, Final Fantasy 6 represents the peak of the series and so the announcement of a remake would certainly be exciting. It is a shame to see that it might not happen – though it’s understandable why.
