This week, Microsoft has revealed that it will soon begin offering its enterprise users a subscription option for Windows 10, allowing companies to pay $7 per month or $84 per year for a Windows 10 license, rather than bulk-buying full licenses for the OS. On top of that, the company also has additional plans for ‘Surface as a Service' and the Hololens in the business world.
There has been some talk of Microsoft potentially offering Windows 10 on a subscription basis in the past and it seems that now, the company is putting that idea to the test with its enterprise users. The subscription was announced in a blog post today, which also notes similar ideas for Surface devices and touches on Hololens progress.
The idea behind this is that now Microsoft's ‘full IT stack' can be paid for on a subscription basis and work places can add or remove services quickly and easily as their needs change. Aside from that, Microsoft has also begun talking about the ‘Surface as a Service' program, which allows authorised Surface distributors to offer Surface devices alongside services like Office 365 and Windows 10. This is mostly aimed at businesses with a lot of travelling or remote workers.
Finally, the Hololens was touched on. While we have mainly seen Hololens demoed as a potential gaming device, that doesn't really seem to be what Microsoft wants it to be. This week's Hololens progress update came in the form of a video showcasing some commercial mixed reality apps for the augmented reality headset.
KitGuru Says: It seems that Microsoft is putting a heavy focus on enterprise right now and trying to get more businesses on to Windows 10 and using Microsoft hardware, like the Surface or Hololens. I do wonder if Microsoft may offer Windows as a subscription to consumers at some point, rather than just enterprise users. Do you guys think a Windows subscription service would catch on?
Yea testing it in the enterprise area for now and if that pans out then it will come to the consumer version as well. Dark times ahead if this actually happens. I know myself for one will not be buying a month to month subscription or a yearly one. I think in the end they will do the same as they do with the Office programs have a subscription version for those that want that and a regular version for those that prefer that if not they will be pretty much shooting themselves in the foot because of the flood gates opening for a different OS or user reverting to a older version of Windows or just taking their Windows 10 offline and using that instead.
I do not think MS will be that stupid or at least I would hope they are not but then again they did release Windows 8.0 that most people hated in it’s default form. Which ever way they decide to go we will find out soon enough for sure.
This is just for Enterprises, who are *already* used to paying a subscription in return for premium support via the Microsoft Software Assurance program. Except unlike MSA it only includes Windows, not the entire Microsoft Enterprise stack, so it is simply a cheaper option for enterprises that do not want the full MSA. Their attempt to monetize consumer versions of Windows is called the Windows Store.
Nah, they are trying to use the Windows Store to monetize Windows 10 Home and Pro. If the Store succeeds it will be much more lucrative than a subscription. This subscription is simply a cheaper version of what has been in place for Enterprises for well over a decade. The difference unlike the current subscription service (Microsoft Software Assurance) it provides only Windows 10 Enterprise and not the entire Microsoft enterprise software stack. But I assume it still offers the premium support that is the point of offering the subscription service.
