There has been talk of Microsoft dropping the Lumia range for some time now but it looks like the company might finally be ready to take the plunge, with reports indicating that Microsoft will “end sales” of Lumias before the end of this year. Why would Microsoft ditch the Lumia? Well if previous rumours are anything to go by, this all could be leading up to the first Surface phone.
This week, a report from Winbeta cited sources within Microsoft claiming that the company plans to stop making Lumia smartphones before the end of the year. Whatever stock remains will be sold but once they are gone, Microsoft may finally move on to Surface smartphones, which is something we have been hearing about for some time.
This is a concept image only.
As Techradar points out, Microsofr'sDirector of Engineering recently tweeted out that a “Surface Phone is not NOT confirmed”, the double negative there was intentional, teasing that the possibility is still out there. We may even see a Surface Phone as soon as October, potentially around the same time as the first Surface all-in-one PC, which was also recently rumoured to be coming in October.

KitGuru Says: The Lumia brand never really found its footing in the market. However, Microsoft's Surface line has been gaining momentum, so a Surface Phone could have the potential to do quite well. Would any of you guys consider grabbing a Surface Phone at all? Or does the idea of Windows on smartphones put you off?

It really is sad that winphones are ignored so much.
I got a lumia 650 this month and I’m so happy with it and how it performs.
I replaced a LG L90 with android which is more or less at the same hardware specs (and price range), but the winphone just feel way snappier and faster system wide. I love how it handles the resources in a way that always gives priority to the system, unlike what happens to android that the apps chock the system.
It is because they’re priced unrealistically.
My 735 only cost me £120 from my network provider. Only the flagship lumias were priced high but still nowhere near iphone or galaxy s levels.
Lumia 920 is still one of the best phones I have ever owned, the combination of wireless charging, awesome camera and glance screen (the cool “new” feature on the 2016 Galaxy lol) was amazing. Just a shame the phones went to **** after Microsoft took over from Nokia. The 930 dropped the glance screen, the 940/950 only came in plus size. A real shame 🙁
they cost cheaper than a same specs android
They really don’t actually. If we take a look at the Lumia 650, priced $200 here with only SD210. You can get an Honor 5X with SD617 for that price. Also, with the lack of app available in the environment, they’re really tilting the favor on the wrong side.
Good that in your country, the network providers provided a subsidized windows phone. Not all are the same though. And the specs they provided…they’re charging extra for the OS that isn’t even fully supported by 3rd party developers.
Wohaa that’s a lot! For that price maybe it doesn’t worth it. I got it here in Greece for 134 euro and I see some shops have it now for about 115.
However now that I have experienced both android and windows and since I can’t afford an iPhone, maybe I could give that something more just for windows OS.
I actually hoped windows phone to happen, but a smartphone is just as good as the apps it have and how it runs on it, so probably android and iOS is the viable mobile OS for now.
Well this is a trap actually, I was told the same, that there are not apps in winphones.
But once I got mine I actually found everything I wanted, so in the end it is just what you want from apps. Sure there are not that many like android, but I have found all the ones I want.
In the android I had more but I couldn’t have more than 2-3 running in my LG l90 because they where crippling the phone since the OS doesn’t prioritize itself to work fast and lag free.
So next time if you still consider a windows phone, take a look at the market and see if you can find the apps that you use. If you can’t, see if there are alternatives. Maybe just like me, there is everything you need in there.
