Blade Runner movie sequel named, coming to virtual reality too

You may have seen attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion, but you haven't seen a sequel to the 1982 tech-noir movie Blade Runner, yet. The in-the-works sequel has now been named as Blade Runner 2049 and as was announced at Oculus Connect, when it debuts in October 2017, it will do so in cinemas and in virtual reality.

It seems only fitting that one of the most iconic technological movies of the 20th century, will be one of the first major releases on a futurustic medium like virtual reality. When the film debuts on 6th October, we'll be able to view it in our Oculus Rift headsets too – though presumably thanks to drivers like Revive, other headsets like the HTC Vive will work too.

Blade Runner 2049 is set 30 years after the storyline of the original and Harrison Ford will be reprising his role as Deckard – what that says about the final questions posed by the original movie remains to be seen. Ridley Scott isn't directing, but they did nab Denis Villeneuve for the role, who previously directed the very well received Sicario.

As Ars points out though – somewhat depressingly – this announcement could be the best moment of the film. Right now we can imagine the possibilities, but there have been so many '80s reboots and sequels, like Total Recall and RoboCop, which have not even come close to matching the original.

KitGuru Says: Here's hoping that the new Blade Runner captures at least some of the magic of the original. Or perhaps it will just be lost in time, like tears in… we get it Jon, you've seen the original movie.

  1. It won’t be bad like those other movies, cause they have the original actor back.
