Phil Spencer speaks out on Xbox multiplatform rumours

Over the last few days, there have been a growing number of rumours around Xbox potentially going multiplatform, bringing some of its biggest franchises to consoles like PlayStation and the Nintendo Switch. We also heard that Microsoft wasn't planning to make any official announcements until the Spring, but due to how rapidly these rumours have spread, the timeline has been moved up.

We're not getting any solid answers this week, but Microsoft Gaming CEO, Phil Spencer, has commented on the situation, stating that there will be a ‘business update' from Xbox next week. During this update, we can expect to get some clarity on Xbox's future plans for multiplatform game releases and future exclusive games (or potential lack of them).

Some of the games rumoured to be going to other platforms include the likes of Gears of War, Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Indiana Jones, Starfield and more.

We've put together a more thorough explanation on the rumours and why a shift towards multiplatform might actually be a good thing for Microsoft and consumers, despite the move first coming off as Xbox ‘giving up' in some way.

KitGuru Says: Given the amount of backlash online, I imagine Microsoft will be revising its plan somewhat. We'll have to wait and see where things land, but we could be heading to a future where games are released ‘first' on Xbox/PC, with releases on other platforms a year or so later.
