Hello Games tweets out ‘No Man’s Sky was a mistake’, confusion ensues

Hello Games and Sean Murray have been awfully quiet since the launch of No Man's Sky, which is most likely down to the poor reception the game got from critics and buyers alike. However, earlier today the studio showed some signs of life on Twitter, with the Hello Games account posting “No Man's Sky was a mistake”. Since then, news outlets across the web have been scrambling to get the full story, with lots of conflicting information going around.

Following the tweet, two outlets, Mashable and Forbes, received emails from Hello Games claiming that the tweet came from an angry employee. In a separate report, Polygon claims to have received an email coming from Sean Murray's own address, in which the team lead takes responsibility for the tweet.

NMS TWEET

Since then though, Sean Murray has actually tweeted on the No Man's Sky Twitter account for the first time since August, stating that the Hello Games server was hacked: “Server hacked. We're binging Mr Robot Episodes as quickly as we can looking for answers. Ep05 is a cracker”.

He then followed that up with another tweet saying “if anything was a mistake, it was using Linked In without 2FA”. This seems to back up the theory that Sean Murray's email account was hacked, leading to a takeover of the company Twitter account. Either way, things seem to be up in the air at the moment, hopefully the story can be cleared up soon.

KitGuru Says: Given how everything has gone down with No Man's Sky, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the tweet came from an angry employee at the studio. However, for now there is too much conflicting information going around to really point the finger in any one direction. We will update this story should more information come to light.

  1. I feel really really sorry for the devs. They’re a two man studio that set out to make a grand game (really, they made it bigger than anyone could possibly have expected to on two people), only to be caught by Sony marketing, forced to push the release date forward and getting stuck in lawsuit hell.

It’s a shame that this is probably the last time we’ll see Indies attempting a big game, for this very reason.

  2. Hey I do. I just don’t speak about it ever and at this rate it’ll take me like 6 years.

  3. That did not just happen to them: they were there, they made the deal with Sony (who can really blame them), and they were very cooperative in the entire marketing process. They had every opportunity to do something about the expectations and the hype, they choose to actually blow it up some more.

These guys saw an opportunity, they took it, and then they could not live up to the expectations they had created for themselves. Live and learn.

  4. glad to hear that and wish you luck 🙂

  5. I thought No Mans Sky was a ok game and I actually had a lot of fun with it. But like I stated before the fun runs out after you explore several planets and Galaxies only to discover yep your the only one yet again. Yea there are ships flying around but when you catch them at the planetary ports you never get to see the beings ever leave their ships except if you go up to the ship and talk to them. That type of thing seems to be the theme for the whole game you never actually see any one else on the planets except for a lot of very strange creatures which are very strange sometimes and can be fun to pester etc.

If they actually had other beings walking around exploring the planets at least you would not feel so alone. Crap even if they gave you a NPC sidekick to roam around with that talked to you would have been great. If they had the type of stuff in the game that I mentioned but I did not see it then I stand corrected. I played it for a whole weekend and did not see another living soul except for the many different types of wacky animal creature. Hey I even seen a ewok type creatures that jabbered and run around on 2 feet and were in small packs and very friendly. So the game had a good start but it needed more a lot more and I thought maybe the dev would have added more stuff to it over time but that now seems like a real pipe dream.

They do not even have to use network play just add a NPC sidekick and maybe make it so you see aliens walking around that could be either friendly or not at least it would make the fun last longer and would be fairly easy to do for them. The network play would be a massive undertaking if the game engine was not designed for that type of game play and would also need them to have servers setup and running so I never expected that to ever be added. What can you expect from a game that was only just over 3GB when first installed. For what it was it actually looked fairly good graphics wise and it ran pretty stable as well after a few updates. Was it worth someone suing the game dev over hell no.

  6. I could believe it was a disgruntled employee, can you imagine having this on your CV. So Mr Jones what have you been doing for the last four years???

  7. I like how people that try to put a positive spin on this piece of crap game start out by saying, “It was a good game and had a lot of fun.” And then they proceed to explain what was wrong with it. (Which usually takes up more space than the positive). Just admit you paid good money for nothing.
