Consumer Reports claims Samsung’s Note 7 recall isn’t official

Last week it came to light that some Samsung Galaxy Note 7 units were suffering from battery failures, causing some of them to explode. Samsung swiftly pulled the Note 7 from sale and responded with a product recall. However, it looks like this recall may not have been organised through proper channels, with Consumer Reports saying that Samsung hasn't handled the situation as well as it should.

In a post made late last week, Consumer Reports pointed out that Samsung did not get in touch with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to make the Galaxy Note 7 recall official.

According to the report, the Galaxy Note 7 can still be found available at multiple retailers. However, if Samsung had got in touch with the CPSC, the recall would have been enforced by law, making it illegal to sell the device in the US until its defect has been fixed.

Given that some Galaxy Note 7 units are suffering from exploding batteries, this would have been classed as a “substantial product hazard” by the CPSC. Apparently, the commission has requested information from Samsung on the matter but has yet to hear back.

KitGuru Says: Samsung's Note 7 recall has been widely publicised at this point so hopefully the recall is effective. Perhaps Samsung will iron things out with the CPSC later this week.

  1. Someone needs to tell Consumer Reports they aren’t relevant anymore.

I know my parents swear by them…but how can you trust a company that expects their own subscribers to pay extra just to access the web site…
