The original Diablo is coming back but Warcraft won’t be

Over the weekend, Blizzard announced that it would be bringing all Diablo 1 content to Diablo 3 as part of a free event set to take place in January. This swiftly sparked up conversation surrounding remakes of Blizzard's other older titles, like the original Warcraft RTS games, unfortunately, it looks like Blizzard will be staying away from Warcraft 1 and 2, shutting down speculation entirely.

During a Q&A panel at Blizzcon, Blizzard co-founder, Frank Pearce responded to a fan asking about potential remakes of the original two Warcraft games, unfortunately while Blizzard does retain the code and assets to those titles, remakes don't appear to be on the table for now.

“We are fortunate enough to have all of the original source code and assets to everything we've done in the past but actually, it turns out, it's really hard to access that stuff, unlock it, and figure out how it all works. Because we're old, we've forgotten”. That said, some folks at Blizzard were apparently interested in the idea and managed to get Warcraft: Orcs & Humans up and running. However, according to Pearce, the original game is “just not fun anymore” by today's standards.

There has been some talk surrounding Starcraft, Diablo and Warcraft remakes over the last year or so and while the rumour mill was actually pretty adamant that we would see StarCraft 1 make a return, it looks like we can only expect to see a spruced up version of the original Diablo for now.

KitGuru Says: Blizzard's comments on the original Warcraft echo what was previously said when there was talk of bringing back Vanilla WoW.  Still, it would be interesting to see if there is enough of a community response to spur a potential change of heart, though there may be less die-hard Warcraft RTS fans compared to the MMO. Do any of you think it would be worth bringing back the original Warcraft games?

  1. Not fun any more by their standards wow. I think a warcraft 1 remake with shiny new graphics and added story line or just combine all the old warcrafts together into one mega version with all of the old story lines but treat them like chapters instead. New upgraded music new graphics upgraded story line to bring it into modern game story telling and you have a hit. But this will never happen until they finally ditch the WoW online game I think. You watch a few years after the WoW world goes away they will start milking the old games for every penny they can get out of them it is just human nature.

  2. more profitable to sell expansions and subscriptions for that brand instead of bringing it back to its roots.

  3. Because instead of innovating the future of games is rehashing decade old ideas with some slightly updated graphics? What is wrong with today’s consumer market that we are more interested in remakes than actual new games (look at the status of current console gaming)

  4. WoW is a continuous remake, they’ve updated the graphics several times to keep milking subscription money. if they wanted to innovate they’d use the brand and make an actual new game out of it, maybe another RTS like the original (hence, back to roots).

  5. It’s been 1 year since I finally resigned from my last work and that decision was a life changer for me… I started doing a job from home, for this company I discovered on-line, for several hours /a day, and I make much more than i did on my previous job… Payment i got for last month was for Nine thousand dollars… Great thing about it is that i have more time for my loved ones… KORTA.NU/MDe

LMAO I nearly fell off my chair, did you read what you typed before you posted it? I think the things you asked for are pretty much the definition of a new game. Is there anything you would like to keep from your idea of a Warcraft 1 remake? Why don’t we replace those no good Orcs while we are at it and replace them with Drow and that title God damn it, so boring let’s rename it Drow hunter extreme.

  7. Ah, my bad, thought you meant that a remake of an old game was better than an expansion to a new game.

  8. Diablo is not coming back, they are just copying a couple levels…

  9. What I asked for was to put all of the warcrafts together but in chapters so when you finish a chapter it is like finishing 1 of the games and you move on to the next chapter which is th next game and you finish that. Adding upgraded HD graphics & Music and HD sound is just part of the remake or remaster whatever you want to call it. If they were to release it the same as the old release versions they are right it would be less fun and look dated. Not sure what the problem is the whole point of them to do it again is make it better as in look better sound better etc. I never said replace the game characters with anything else I did say they could add story line like give the characters maybe more modern lines or spice up the videos a bit to modernize the games a bit to get the younger people interested in the game. Myself I would be good with it just spiced up in Graphics and sound and updated video scenes but the younger crowd maybe they would think it to be boring and kinda outdated.

  10. No, the entire 16-dungeon campaign is coming back along with the four main bosses, albeit for a limited time. It has been said by Blizzard multiple times at this point.

  11. I think the reason they won’t update Warcraft is that it would highlight all their retcons. Diablo doesn’t really have that problem.
