Over the last week or so there have been several sources claiming that Nintendo would finally reveal the NX console this month and fortunately enough, the information turned out to be accurate, as a preview trailer for the system went live this afternoon. This quick three-minute look at the system gives us a new name for the console, which is now known as the ‘Nintendo Switch'.
This trailer comes after months and months of silence from Nintendo on the subject of NX. It seems that investors have also got a little excited over the reveal, as Nintendo's market share value also shot up once news hit that a reveal would be happening today. The Nintendo Switch basically has all of the features previously leaked. It is a home console, that also doubles as a gaming tablet of sorts with detachable controllers and a docking station for use on a TV instead. Honestly judging by the trailer, the idea actually looks pretty awesome.
The trailer gives us a quick look at some of the games coming to NX, including Zelda, Splatoon, NBA 2K and even The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. The console is launching in March 2017 but aside from that, no further details were given so we are still in the dark when it comes to specifications and pricing.
KitGuru Says: The Nintendo Switch is a pretty good name and it gets the message across nicely, which is a big step up from the Wii U. The trailer video also did a good job of selling me on the idea of a home console doubling as a portable handheld. Have you guys seen the Nintendo Switch reveal? What do you think of it?
What a pants gimmick. This will do as badly as the WiiU…
In college we were put into groups and had to design a console of the future. By now there are three designs I remember. Firstly, a console in the shape of a cube that utilises the (then new) cloud to store games, a tablet with removable controllers on the sides and a gaming table where the screen (and controls?) were embedded into the desk itself.
When the Ouya came out a year later we joked about patenting the other ideas. Now the NX is almost exactly like our original college design we’re genuinely wondering if there were any scouts in the room at the time xD
Ok so is this Nintendo’s answer to the PS4 and Xbox one and the new revisions of those consoles with even more horse power under their hoods. You would think Nintendo would have learned from their past mistakes by releasing under powered tech to compete. I know this thing has some very nice features that become a hand held as well I do not think it was the right move to release a product that they hope will go head to head with the higher powered consoles. Sony & Microsoft are releasing new revisions of their console for a reason and one of them is to claim 4K gaming on the spec sheet. I really hope Nintendo has something else up their sleeve to compete with the higher powered consoles and not just this because I for one would not go near it if the games all look like the ones in the video provided. Yes I know graphics don’t make the whole game but they sure do help in a very big way to make the games more appealing to look at.
Nintendo have stated before that they aren’t trying to compete with those consoles 😛 People still buy Nintendo products because people love Nintendo games, it’s nothing to do with specs
It has a lot to do with specs because at the end of the day if it can not play the same games as the rest of the console then it become a light weight dust collector sitting on the TV stand that the owner got bored with because it shines at Nintendo sponsored games but has trouble with the rest of them by limiting the detail levels just to make the grade in the frame rates etc etc.
Hmm this has be quite worried tbh.
Don’t get me wrong I love the fact that Nintendo are still stubbornly doing their own thing. It does give us some variation in the near identical black boxes of PS4 and Xbone.
But I honestly cannot see many adults going for this at all. Despite the trailer showing seemingly only young professionals in their 20s/30s I can only see this being a cool gimmick for kids. And something to shut them up with on the plane/long car journeys.
Older gamers I feel care more about: quality, variety and accessibility of games, rather then playing on a tablet. There is a reason we don’t hear about the Razer Edge Pro tablet (very similar design btw!) any more.
But those kids already have tablets and phones. I suspect the Switch is going to be DOA
And thats there problem they do need to compete if they want a successful system just look at the wii u
