MSI plans to launch more Claw handhelds in the future

The MSI Claw garnered plenty attention as one of the most exciting gadgets showcased at CES 2024. It adds to the competition in the gaming handheld sector and represents Intel's first foray into this market with the Arc-based Core Ultra 100H series. MSI is aiming to have a presence in this market for years to come, as it has confirmed that it plans to launch more Claw consoles.

In an interview with IGN, Clifford Chun, MSI system product managing director, stated that the Claw is just the beginning of MSI's ambitious plans. Future upgrades for the series are already in the works, promising more powerful CPU and GPU capabilities. MSI revealed that the first Claw took two years to develop, and it could have entered the market sooner if Intel had released Meteor Lake earlier. However, now that the Claw has arrived, it's here to stay for a while.

According to Chun, MSI plans to maintain a regular two to three-year release cycle for its systems, and Claw 2, 3, and 4 are already in the works. While specific details on the enhancements are still unknown, the primary focus will be on improving CPU and GPU capabilities, with the possibility of subsequent refreshes.

Intel's upcoming Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake CPUs are potential options for the future Claw series. However, Lunar Lake is designed for low-power devices so MSI may need something more powerful for gaming handhelds with a power usage of 15-30 W. The upcoming Panther Lake CPUs are another option, and considering they're expected to be released sometime in 2025/2026, that could be a better fit for the Claw's release cycle.

It's still unclear when MSI will release its first portable gaming console. The company has not announced a specific release date, but it should come out sometime during 2024.

KitGuru says: Like MSI, Asus, Lenovo, and all other gaming brands are likely planning to launch more of their portable gaming consoles, as long as the first models sell well enough.
